Pen pal writing is a form of letter writing between people from different places . Most pen pals send handwritten letters through the mail but some communicate by . 4 Stage of Writing: Prewriting
Prewriting is the first stage in the writing process. In prewriting, the writer jots down ideas by brainstorming or completing graphic organizers. These ideas are not written in complete sentences, but in words and phrases. 8 Practice Activity The teacher will assist the class in completing a graphic organizer for writing a pen pal letter. As guided practice, the class will complete all sections using the think aloud method by writing some of the teacher’s ideas and some of the student’s ideas. The teacher will have the organizer on the overhead projector, and she will fill in the organizer with information using words and phrases. 9 Assessment Activity Students will complete a graphic organizer with information they will include in their pen pal letter. 12 STAGE OF WRITING:DRAFTING
Drafting is the second stage in the writing process. In drafting, the writer uses the graphic organizer from the prewriting stage to form complete sentences. Each box in the graphic organizer will turn into a paragraph. Do not worry about spelling or neatness because during this stage, the most important part is getting down the content. 13 Practice Activity As guided practice, the teacher will have the graphic organizer on the overhead so the class can see the process of turning the graphic organizer into a draft of a pen pal letter. The teacher will use the think aloud method as she begins to form sentences from the information on the graphic organizer. 14 Assessment Activity Students will complete a draft of a pen pal letter using the graphic organizer. They will write in complete sentences.
