ASHP is a constantly growing organization that currently has over 40,000 members including health-system pharmacists, pharmacy students and technicians. ASHP was founded in 1942 and the original “H” in the acronym stood for “Hospital”. In 1995, ASHP changed the “H” to “Health-System” to reflect the changes in the profession that extended beyond inpatient care into ambulatory care and home care. The headquarters is located in Bethesda, MD- just outside of Washington, D.C.
ASHP believes the mission of pharmacists is to help people achieve optimal health outcomes. ASHP helps its members achieve this mission by advocating and supporting the professional practice of pharmacists in hospitals, health systems, ambulatory clinics, and other settings spanning the full spectrum of medication use. ASHP serves its members as their collective voice on issues related to medication use and public health.
