The Art of Studying Materia Medica
How to distinguish remedies and how to differentiate between them.
2
Families of Remedies Mineral and Metal Remedies Animal Remedies
Plant Remedies Nosodes Sarcodes Imponderabilia
3
Mineral Remedies Question? How much does the origin of a substance give information about its possible use. Studying the chemical behavior and the structure of mineral remedies as found in nature can be of use in understanding the use of many remedies Main mineral remedies used in homeopathy?
4
Common Mineral Remedies
Mineral Remedies often used in childhood and developmental issues Natrum carbonicum and muriaticum Magnesium carbonicum and muriaticum Calcarea carbonica & phos Silicea Phosphorus Sulphur
5
Themes and common symptoms
Development issues – “Defective nutrition”. Growth, identity, structure, belonging. Finding oneself in life. The challenge of seeking one’s identity, place and security in the world. Bone, joint, digestion, skin issues. Mentally: Defining the ego. Weakness in development or becoming too rigid in one’s ideas and identity.
6
“Essence of each remedy”
Natrums? Struggle to survive on one’s own. Lack of emotional nurturing. Feeling alone, has idea that it’s essential to survive alone. Magnesiums? Life is a fight. I don’t really belong here. Have to fight to survive or just simply give up. Averse to quarrels and fights. Can explode if let’s go. Siliceas? Struggle between adaptability and rigidity. Impressionable, easily wounded, penetrated. Needs to create a hard exterior to cope with the sensitivity
7
More Phosphorus? Life is too much. Its hard to maintain my identity and uniqueness. Too sensitive for the world. Easily falls sick. Everything burns up. Can’t breathe. Collapse. Ego identity merges with others. Sulphur? Everything comes out. Skin, mucus membranes, inflammations, burning pains. Ego too developed. On own, above others. Too detached.

Animal Remedies Insects Snakes/reptiles Spiders Sea creatures Milks
10
Insects The largest family of animal remedies. Millions of types of insects. We only use a few. Is it enough? Not every insect is Apis!!! Why do people need remedies made from insects? Insect themes: ?
11
Themes Busy, activity, active Fast, quick, sudden
Fastidious, order, linearity Irritability, anger, rage, violence. Attack and being attacked Sexuality: attractiveness or repulsion. Appearance: needing to be attractive, beautiful, or feeling of being ugly
12
More Egotistical, self-centered, demanding. Needing attention
Low self esteem: feeling dirty, shame, self disgust Appetite: voracious, or ability to do without food for long periods Aversion to water. Hydrophobic Swelling, puffiness, inflammations Burning, stinging pains, biting pains Urinary organs, joints
13
Remedies Apis Like - Hyxmenoptera Bug like – lice like
Apis, Apis regina, Vespa crabo Cantharis (spanish fly) Formica rufa (red ant) Blatta orientalis (cockroach) Culex (mosquito) Musca domestica (house fly) Doryphora (colorado beetle) Coccinella (Ladybird) Cimex lectularius (bedbug) Coccus cacti (cochineal) Pediculus capitis (head lice) Pulex irritans (human flea)
14
More Butterflies, moths Bombyx processiona (procession moth)
Inachis io (peacock butterfly) Limenitis bredowii californica (california sister butterfly Morpho menelaus occidentalis (amazon butterfly)
15
SNAKES Snake remedies are very important in homeopathy
They also have a potent symbolism in the human imagination, being spoken about in the bible and seen as representing the underworld and dark forces as well as representing the “reptillian” part of human consciousness and the integration of man’s animal instincts.
16
SNAKE THEMES Toxicology of snake venom is predominantly on the nervous system and the blood system. Therefore most pathologies that snakes are needed in are destructive processes to the blood system and nervous systems. It also strongly affects the hormonal system, often with difficult menses and at menopause. Irregular heat and congestion of the body is important.
17
Lachesis as the archetype
Lachesis is the most popular and used snake remedy. However, it is only one of many snakes used in homeopathy. Crotalidea family: Lachesis, Crotalus cascavella, Crotalus horridus, Bothrops Ophidia family: The viper family, including viperis redi, aspis, communis Elapidea family: Elaps, Naja
18
OTHER SNAKES Dendroaspis polylepis Bitis arietans arietans Python
Bungaris fasciitis
19
Mental picture of snakes
Lachesis as archetype and comparison Strong willed, intellectual, witty, extroverted, sharp tongued, critical, Sexually minded Forsaken, lost, alone, Jealousy, suspicion, paranoia, persecution Anger, rage, violence Themes of death
20
Organs and Systems Affected
Blood system: throbbing, congestion, heat. Easy bleeding, strokes, clots Infections, sepsis, serious conditions, death like states Nervous system: paralysis, often from stroke, apoplexy Head, congestion, pulsating Throat, infections < left side Ovaries, uterus, Liver, lungs.
21
Other Reptiles 4 families Tortoises and turtles
Alligators, crocodiles, caimans and gharials Snakes, lizards and amphisbaenians Tuartaras (sphenodontida) Lizards may be thought of when looking at snakes e.g. Heloderma suspectum (gila monster) and Varanus komodoensis (komodo dragon). Also the dinosaurs Maiasaura lapidea (fossilized Maiasaura peeblesorum) and Tyrannosaurus rex (T Rex).
22
Sea Remedies Challenges!! The Sea is Big
Many types of animals/fish in the sea. Hard to classify. Three basic classifications: Bi valve, gastropod, cephalopod. Archetype of three are Calcarea carbonic – bivalve, murex – gastropods and Sepia – cephalopod More remedies are used from the bi valve and cephalopod families
23
Sepia Like many animals, an understanding of the remedy can be achieved through studying the behavior of the animal. Sepia and most cephalopods have an internal shell and they live outside the shell. Sepia is able to move quickly through a suction/propulsion system in body. It moves fast and likes to be active. Sepia (unlike squid and some octopus) is more of a loner and less social.
24
Main Ideas Activity, busy, industrious Needs to keep active
If not able, gets dragged down, worn out Affects hormonal system. Sexual system Sexual identity, sexual abuse Independence/dependence Aggression v. passivity and indifference. Sarcasm, sharp tongued
25
Physicals Hormonal symptoms – menses, menopause, puberty, pregnancy. NBWS the pill. Sex, aversion, indifference Dragging pains Venous system > motion < cold, chilly
26
Other Cephalopods Eledone cirrhosa (small octopus)
Loligo vulgaris (common squid) Nautilus pompilius pompilius (nautilus) Octopus vulgaris (common octopus) Cephalopods are highly intelligent animals and have sophisticated strategies for survival.
27
Comparisons with other sea remedies
Murex (purple fish). Strong female sx, hemorrhage, leucorrhea, weight in vaginal area and heaviness. Sharp cutting pains in uterus, pains shooting upward and extending to left breast. Cancer and ulcerations in cervix and uterus. Mentally, low spirits, weary and debility. Pains are lancinating, stitching and shooting. Stomach has empty feeling, sinking. Sexual desire is strong, more so in Murex than Sepia.
28
Other gastropods Cyprea eglantina (Cowrie Shell)
Helix tosta (Toasted edible snail) Helix aspersa (Common garden snail) Helix pomatia Gastropods live inside the shell. Don’t have such a need to move. Because of shell, more likely to have issues to do with retreat into the shell. Soft and hardness or weakness and strength.
29
Bi valves Animals that live in the shell. Calcarea carbonica
Venus mercenaria (the clam) Conchiolinum (mother of pearl) Pearl (pearl immersion)
30
Other Sea Remedies Corallium rubrum (coral)
Spongia (roasted sea sponge) Asterias rubrum (star fish) Medusa (jellyfish) Astacus fluviatis (crawfish or river crab) Homarus (lobster) Chironex fleckeri (box jellyfish) Hippocampus kuda (sea horse) Oncorhynchus tschawytshe (salmon) Ambra grisea (ambergris)
31
