Lesson 11 – “Teach Us To Pray” 11:1-13 A disciple observes Jesus praying…asks Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…” v. 1 Jesus gives a “model prayer” vv. 2-4 Not a “specific formula” to follow verbatim It addresses attitudes re: God’s identity, daily provisions, temptation, forgiving others, etc.

Lesson 11 – “Teach Us To Pray” 11:1-13 Jesus follows the “model prayer” with a parable…The Friend At Midnight vv. 5-8 The “friend” didn’t get what he wanted, needed because his friendship was valued He received his request because of his persistence cp. 1 Jn 5: Jas 4:1-3

Lesson 11 – “Teach Us To Pray” 11:1-13 Jesus exhorts persistent prayer vv. 9-10 “Ask…Seek…Knock” are continuous verbs These are actions children of God should continually do when praying to their Father Jesus portrays a “giving” Father vv More than earthly fathers & their children

Lesson 11 – Blasphemy 11:14-28 Jesus casts out a demon vv The man was mute…afterward, he spoke The crowd marveled…the Jews blasphemed (they attributed Jesus’ power to Beelzebul) The crowd demanded a “sign” as proof of Jesus’ identity & power

Lesson 11 – Blasphemy 11:14-28 Jesus rebukes their blasphemy vv He exposes the absurdity of the charge v. 17 He warns of judgment v. 19 cp. Acts 19:11-14 He illustrates “overpowering” Satan vv He firmly establishes what it means to be either “with” Him or “against” Him vv

Lesson 11 – Blasphemy 11:14-28 Jesus again emphasizes the spiritual over the physical vv A woman pronounces blessings upon whoever gave birth to, nursed Jesus He counters by pronouncing blessings upon all who hear the word of God & observe it

Lesson 11 – His Perception 11:29-36 Jesus describes “this generation” vv They were “wicked” for demanding a sign The only “sign” would be the “sign of Jonah” cp. Mt 12:38-45 A resurrected “prophet” coming to preach and encourage repentance

Lesson 11 – His Perception 11:29-36 Jesus describes “this generation” vv Previous “generations” would condemn “this generation” because they repented Yet, Someone greater than both Jonah and Solomon was here…yet, they were rejecting Him

Lesson 11 – His Perception 11:29-36 Jesus discusses the “light” vv No one lights a lamp only to put it in the cellar or cover it up cp. 8:16-18 Our own “lamp” = the eye (our willingness to see, accept truth) v. 34 We are either “fully lit” or “totally dark” v. 36

Lesson 11 – His Perception 11:29-36 Jesus discusses the “light” vv These passages are just as relevant & current as the day when Jesus spoke them Our own “generations” (Modern, Post-Modern) reveal that we are becoming more dark Past “generations” rise up & condemn us

Lesson 11 – Jewish Woes 11:37-54 A Pharisee invites Jesus to breakfast v. 37 Jesus does not observe the Jewish ceremonial “baptism” v. 38 Jesus pronounces woes vv He condemns their focus only on the outward He condemns their desire for others’ praise
