2 Do Now Journal With what you know about Cardiovascular concerns today, what would be your message to those around you that you care about on the importance of Good Cardiovascular Health?

3 Circulatory System Study Guide - Preview
The circulatory system is made up of these 3 parts: 1.Heart 2.Blood Vessels 3.Blood The major function of the circulatory system is to: Role of the different components of blood: Plasma- Platelets- White Blood Cells- Red Blood Cells- This protein in RBC’s allows oxygen & carbon dioxide to attach to the RBC so it may be carried throughout the body: Hemoglobin Tiny blood vessels where materials such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, & waste products enter & leave the bloodstream: Capillaries Also know as high blood pressure: Hyper-tension A cancer of the tissues of the body that produce white blood cells: Leukemia Valve between the left atrium & left ventricle: Mitral Largest artery in the body: Aorta Superior vena cava’s function VS. Inferior vena cava’s function: Blood leaving the heart from the right ventricle goes to the Lungs by way of the Pulmonary Artery

Make a fist. Open the fist Now make a fist and open it as quickly as you can. Now repeat that procedure for One minute. Now how does your hand and fingers feel? Now think about an organ in your body that never fatigues and works so hard that it pumps 2,000 gallons of blood everyday through out your body! The topic of the day is the heart and the rest of the circulatory system that is essential to life.

6 Chambers of the Heart- heart is divided into 4 chambers [rooms]
Right Atrium - right upper chamber, receives oxygen-poor/depleted blood (CO2) from the body through the inferior vena cava & superior vena cava Right Ventricle- lower chamber, pumps blood into the pulmonary artery Left Atrium – left upper chamber, receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs via the pulmonary vein Left Ventricle – left lower chamber, pumps blood through the aortic valve into the aorta

7 Veins and Arteries – move the blood in and out of the heart and around the body
Arteries – a blood vessel carrying blood away from the heart Veins – a blood vessel carrying blood back to the heart

8 Veins and Arteries Aorta – biggest and longest artery, carries oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to the body Pulmonary artery – carries oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle to the lungs Pulmonary vein – carries oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium Superior vena cava – carries oxygen-poor blood to the right atrium from the upper parts of the body Inferior vena cava – large vein carries oxygen-poor blood to the right atrium from the lower half of the body

9 Valves – flaps of tissue that close and open to insure that blood flows in the proper direction.
Tricuspid valve – between RA and RV. Pulmonary valve – between right ventricle and pulmonary artery, when ventricle contracts, valve opens Mitral valve (bicuspid) – located between the left atrium and left ventricle, prevents back-flow of blood from ventricle to atrium Aortic Valve – valve from LV to Aorta (largest artery)

Why is the circulatory system like a train? What is the major function of the circulatory/cardio vascular system? What is another crucial function of this system? What are the 3 major components of the this system?

11 Why is the circulatory/cardiovascular system like a train?
A train picks up people and products and transports them to their destination. The blood picks up nutrients and gases and delivers them to the appropriate areas where they can be used by the cells.

12 What is the major function of the cardiovascular system?
Major function is to transport nutrients and gases to various areas of the body to be used by the cells to do their jobs.

13 What is another important function of the cardiovascular system?
This system removes waste materials from the cells and delivers them to the kidneys, lungs and skin to be removed from the body.

14 What are the major components of the cardiovascular system?
Blood Heart Blood vessels

15 Pick up a pink : 3- List the 3 main components of the cardiovascular system 2- State the 2 important functions/jobs of this system 1- Why is the cardiovascular system like a train?

16 What is the pulmonary and systemic circulatory systems?
Pulmonary circulation occurs between the heart and the lungs only. These arteries and veins pick up & carry O2 back to the heart while CO2 is being dropped off at the lungs to be exhaled. Systemic circulation takes O2 to the cells of the body and pick up CO2 (waste material) from the cells

17 Your heart is a muscle about the size of your fist
Your heart is a muscle about the size of your fist. Compare it to other muscles. Can you control it like you do the muscles in your arms or legs? Can you exercise it like you do other muscles? Why or Why not? Exercise isn’t the only way to keep the heart healthy. Brainstorm a list of ways to keep the cardiovascular system in tip-top shape. What can happen if this system becomes unhealthy?

Artery- blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. Vein- blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart. Capillary- smallest blood vessel found between arteries and veins. Atrium- one of two upper chambers of the heart. Blood – 4 parts A- B- O- Universal donor AB- Universal recipient
