1. OSIRIS-REx’s Dolores Hill Honored by The White House with Coveted Champions of Change Honors
The White House recognized Dolores Hill, co-lead of the OSIRIS- REx Target Asteroids! program with Carl Hergenrother, as one of 12 Champions of Change for citizen science on June 25, The event honored people and organizations which have demonstrated exemplary leadership in engaging the broader, non-expert community in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research.
Ms. Hill suggested the Target Asteroids! concept and developed it with the mission’s educational team during the Concept Study for the OSIRIS-REx mission in In the first year of the program, 138 amateurs registered from 25 states and 26 countries and provided 87 sets of data on 17 near-Earth asteroids. Target Asteroids! also serves as a template for future OSIRIS-REx (and other) citizen science programs by demonstrating how to foster collaboration between scientists and the public.
