1 1.To produce your chosen product you have to follow a design and make
process. First of all the needs of the customer have to be identified. State four stages of the design and make process that will have to be followed. Investigation Ideas Development Manufacture 2 (a) Name three hand tools or items of hand-held equipment that could be used during the manufacture of your chosen product. Tennon saw G-cramp Screwdriver Ruler File Cordless Drill Hacksaw Hammer Engineering square Hole saw

2 during the manufacture of your chosen product.
(b) Name two power tools or items of powered equipment that could be used during the manufacture of your chosen product. No marks will be awarded for repeated answers from Q2a. Disc Cutter Vacuum Former Lathe Band saw (c) Explain how one item of computer controlled machinery or equipment could be used during the manufacture of your chosen product. No marks will be awarded for repeated answers from Q2a/2b Vinyl cutter Modella 3D miller CAM milling machine Plasma cutter

3 materials/ingredients/components to use for your chosen product
Question 1 (a) State one research method that you could use when investigating the materials/ingredients/components to use for your chosen product Research method (b) State one reason for choosing to use this research method. Questionnaires Web Shops/outlets Books/Magazines Find out people’s opinions, views, preferences, target groups Find out what is currently on the market: competitors Get ideas about products, materials, costs etc. (c) State how you would carry out this research method. Door to door/on the street/ mail people ( ) Researching on computer through various search engines Visit shops/outlets observe/take photographs/make notes.

5 Question 1 continued (b) State two reasons why it is important to undertake research. Find out what is currently on the market, so you do not make the same product Find out what people want (latest fashion) and what they are willing to pay, so that your product is going to sell well. What materials, fixings, fitments, software, manufacturing equipment is available to make your product, so that it is up to date with the latest technology. (c) State two areas of research that you would investigate for your chosen product. interviews/questionnaires to people who use or have used temporary shelters (Wedding planners, rescue workers, armed forces, aid workers). Look in shops, magazines, internet for existing products in order to evaluate the competition. Look at environmental issues to make product safe and as environmentally friendly as possible..

6 Putting a copyright or patent on their design
(d) Explain why you think it is important to develop an idea before a design is put into production. This will avoid costly mistakes being made during production. It is cheaper to model develop designs to ensure they work as production costs can be high and materials could be wasted. Also faulty/poor products will be returned costing companies lots of money. Companies could be sued and consumers could loose confidence in that company resulting in business being lost or they could go out of business (bankrupt) (e) State one way in which manufacturers can prevent their ideas from being used by other companies? Putting a copyright or patent on their design You see copyright dates in every book and on every other published work, and many products carry the patent symbol somewhere on their packaging. You also hear about copyrights and patents when there are questions about who owns the rights to a certain work or product. The United States government maintains copyright and patent programs to ensure everybody is able to profit from their original creative works. Of course, financial profit isn't the only reason to copyright or patent something: The programs are simply meant to give a creator legal control over when, where and how his or her creation is published or used Patents work a bit differently from copyrights, but you can think of them as copyrights for inventions find out what constitutes an invention). All a patent really does is give the patent-holder the right to stop others from producing, selling or using his or her invention. Unlike copyrights, patents protect the idea or design of the invention, rather than any tangible form of the invention, and so patenting something is a much trickier procedure than copyrighting something.

7 Question 1 continued (b) State three methods used to identify a market for your chosen product. Questionnaires (user views, preferences, fashion trends, etc.) Web research ( competitors, prices, etc) Evaluating existing products (materials, features, construction, etc)

8 Designers consider ergonomics when designing a product to be used by
humans. (c) (i) What is meant by the term ergonomics? The study of the design and arrangement of equipment so that people will interact with the equipment in healthy, comfortable, and efficient manner. As related to computer equipment, ergonomics is concerned with such factors as the physical design of the keyboard, screens, and related hardware, and the manner in which people interact with these hardware devices. (ii) Give one reason why designers consider ergonomics. To make sure designs are fit for purpose, safe, healthy and efficient to use (iii) Describe how a designer would use ergonomics when designing a product. In the case of a ride on toy it must be strong, interesting for them to play with so that they can interact with it, and safe from dangers
