Country Code
2
Telecommunications in East Timor - Country code
Following Indonesia's withdrawal from East Timor in 1999, the telecommunications infrastructure was destroyed in the ensuing violence, and Telkom Indonesia ceased to provide services. A new country code (670) was allocated to East Timor by the International Telecommunication Union, but international access often remained severely limited.
3
Telecommunications in East Timor - Country code
A complicating factor has been the fact that 670 was previously used by the Northern Marianas, with many carriers not aware that the code is now used by East Timor. (The Northern Marianas, as part of the North American Numbering Plan, now use the country code 1 and the area code 670.)
4
ISO 6346 - Country Code (Optional)
The country code consists of two capital letters of the Latin alphabet as described in ISO It indicates the country where the code is registered not the nationality of the owner or operator of the container. The letters of the code shall not be less than 100 mm high.
5
Satellite phone - Virtual country codes
Satellite phones are usually issued with numbers in a special List of country calling codes|country calling code.
6
Satellite phone - Virtual country codes
Inmarsat satellite phones are issued with codes In the past additional country codes have been allocated to different satellites but the codes +871 to +874 have been phased out at the end of 2008 leaving Inmarsat users with the same country code regardless of which satellite their terminal is registered with.
7
Satellite phone - Virtual country codes
Low earth orbit systems including some of the defunct ones have been allocated number ranges in the International Telecommunications Union's Global Mobile Satellite System virtual country code Iridium satellite phones are issued with codes and Globalstar, although allocated and use North American Numbering Plan|U.S. telephone numbers except for service resellers located in Brazil which use the +881 range.
8
Satellite phone - Virtual country codes
Smaller regional satellite phone networks are allocated numbers in the +882 code designated for International Networks (country code)|international networks which is not used exclusively for satellite phone networks.

Area code - Country code
By convention, international telephone numbers are indicated by prefixing the country code with a plus sign (+), which is meant to indicate that the subscriber must dial the international dialing prefix in the country from which the call is placed
12
International calling code - Locations with no country code
In Telecommunications in Antarctica|Antarctica, dialing is dependent on the parent country of each base:
13
Top level domain - Internationalized country code TLDs
An internationalized country code top-level domain (IDN ccTLD) is a top-level domain with a specially encoded domain name that is displayed in an end user application, such as a web browser, in its language-native script or alphabet, such as the Arabic alphabet, or a non-alphabetic writing system, such as Chinese characters. IDN ccTLDs are an application of the internationalized domain name (IDN) system to top-level Internet domains assigned to countries, or independent geographic regions.
14
Top level domain - Internationalized country code TLDs
ICANN started to accept applications for IDN ccTLDs in November 2009, and installed the first set into the Domain Names System in May The first set was a group of Arabic names for the countries of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. By May 2010, 21 countries had submitted applications to ICANN, representing 11 scripts.
15
Country code top-level domain
A 'country code top-level domain' ('ccTLD') is an Internet top-level domain generally used or reserved for a country, a sovereign state, or a dependent territory.
16
Country code top-level domain
All ASCII ccTLD identifiers are two letters long, and all two-letter top-level domains are ccTLDs. In 2010, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) began implementing internationalized country code TLDs, consisting of language-native characters when displayed in an end-user application. Creation and delegation of ccTLDs is described in RFC 1591, corresponding to ISO ISO alpha-2|alpha-2 country codes.
17
Country code top-level domain - Delegation and management
IANA is responsible for determining an appropriate trustee for each ccTLD
18
Country code top-level domain - Relation to ISO 3166-1
cquote2|The IANA is not in the business of deciding what is and what is not a country. The selection of the ISO 3166 list as a basis for country code top-level domain names was made with the knowledge that ISO has a procedure for determining which entities should be and should not be on that list.|Jon Postel|RFC 1591
19
Country code top-level domain - Unused ISO 3166-1 codes
Almost all current ISO codes have been assigned and do exist in DNS.
20
Country code top-level domain - Unused ISO 3166-1 codes
However, some of these are effectively unused. In particular, the ccTLDs for the Norwegian dependency Bouvet Island (.bv|bv) and the designation Svalbard and Jan Mayen (.sj|sj) do exist in DNS, but no subdomains have been assigned, and it is Norid policy not to assign any at present. Two France|French territories, .bl|bl (Saint Barthélemy) and .mf|mf (Saint Martin (France)|Saint Martin), await local assignment by France's government.
21
Country code top-level domain - Unused ISO 3166-1 codes
The code .eh|eh, although eligible as ccTLD for Western Sahara, has never been assigned and does not exist in Domain Name System|DNS. Only one subdomain is still registered in .gb|gb (ISO for the United Kingdom) and no new registrations are being accepted for it. Sites in the United Kingdom generally use .uk|uk (see below).
22
Country code top-level domain - Unused ISO 3166-1 codes
The former .um ccTLD for the United States Minor Outlying Islands|U.S. Minor Outlying Islands was removed in April Under RFC 1591 rules .um is eligible as a ccTLD on request by the relevant governmental agency and local Internet user community.
23
Country code top-level domain - ASCII ccTLDs not in ISO 3166-1
Several ASCII ccTLDs are in use that are not ISO two-letter codes. Some of these codes were specified in older versions of the ISO list.
24
Country code top-level domain - ASCII ccTLDs not in ISO 3166-1
* .uk|uk (United Kingdom): The ISO code for the United Kingdom is GB. However, the JANET network had already selected uk as a top-level identifier for its pre-existing JANET NRS|Name Registration Scheme, and this was incorporated into the DNS root. .gb|gb was assigned with the intention of a transition, but this never occurred and the use of uk is now entrenched.
25
Country code top-level domain - ASCII ccTLDs not in ISO 3166-1
* .su|su This obsolete ISO 3166 code for the Soviet Union was assigned when the Soviet Union was still extant; moreover, new su registrations are accepted.
26
Country code top-level domain - ASCII ccTLDs not in ISO 3166-1
* .ac|ac (Ascension Island): This code is a vestige of Internet Assigned Numbers Authority|IANA's decision in 1996 to allow the use of codes reserved in the ISO alpha-2 reserve list for use by the Universal Postal Union. The decision was later reversed, with Ascension Island now the sole outlier. (Three other ccTLDs, .gg|gg (Guernsey), .im|im (Isle of Man) and .je|je (Jersey) also fell under this category from 1996 until they received corresponding ISO 3166 codes in March 2006.)
27
Country code top-level domain - ASCII ccTLDs not in ISO 3166-1
* .eu|eu (European Union): On September 25, 2000, ICANN decided to allow the use of any two-letter code in the ISO reserve list that is reserved for all purposes
28
Country code top-level domain - ASCII ccTLDs not in ISO 3166-1
* .tp|tp (the previous ISO code for East Timor): Being phased out in favor of .tl|tl since 2005.
29
Country code top-level domain - Historical ccTLDs
There are two ccTLDs that have been deleted after the corresponding 2-letter code was withdrawn from ISO : .cs|cs (for Czechoslovakia) and .zr|zr (for Zaire)
30
Country code top-level domain - Historical ccTLDs
The historical country codes .dd|dd for the German Democratic Republic and yd for South Yemen were eligible for a ccTLD, but not allocated; see also .de|de and .ye|ye.
31
Country code top-level domain - Historical ccTLDs
The temporary reassignment of country code cs (Serbia and Montenegro) until its split into .rs|rs and .me|me (Serbia and Montenegro, respectively) led to some controversies about the stability of ISO country codes, resulting in a second edition of ISO in 2007 with a guarantee that retired codes will not be reassigned for at least 50 years, and the replacement of RFC 3066 by RFC 4646 for country codes used in language tags in 2006.
32
Country code top-level domain - Historical ccTLDs
The previous ISO code for Yugoslavia, YU, was removed by ISO on , but the .yu|yu ccTLD remained in operation. Finally, after a two-year transition to Serbian .rs|rs and Montenegrin .me|me, the .yu domain was phased out in March 2010.
33
Country code top-level domain - Historical ccTLDs
Australia was originally assigned the .au#Historic second-level domains|oz country code, which was later changed to .au|au with the .oz domains moved to .oz.au.
34
Country code top-level domain - Internationalized ccTLDs
ICANN requires all potential international TLDs to use at least one letter that does not resemble a Latin letter, or have at least three letters, in an effort to avoid IDN homograph attacks. However, this does not protect against homograph attacks involving two non-Latin alphabets having letters often represented by similar glyphs, such as the Cyrillic and Greek alphabets, for example.
35
Country code top-level domain - Unconventional usage
Lenient registration restrictions on certain ccTLDs have resulted in various domain hacks
36
Country code top-level domain - Unconventional usage
Some ccTLDs may also be used for typosquatting. The domain cm of Cameroon has generated interest due to the possibility that people might miss typing the letter o for sites in the com.
37
Country code top-level domain - Commercial usage
Some of the world's smallest countries and non-sovereign or colonial entities with their own country codes have opened their TLDs for worldwide commercial use.

44
Postcode - Country code prefixes
ISO alpha-2 country codes were recommended to be used in conjunction with postal codes starting in 1994, but they have not become widely used. The European Committee for Standardization recommends use of ISO Alpha-2 codes for international postcodes and a UPU guide on international addressing states that administrations may recommend the use of ISO Alpha-2 codes.
45
Postcode - Country code prefixes
Andorra, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Ecuador and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines use the ISO alpha-2 as a prefix in their postal codes.
46
Postcode - Country code prefixes
In some countries (such as those of continental Europe, where a numeric postcode format of four or five digits is commonly used) the numeric postal code is sometimes prefixed with a country code when sending international mail to that country.
47
Mobile country codes A 'mobile country code' (MCC) is used in combination with a 'mobile network code' (MNC) (also known as a MCC / MNC tuple) to uniquely identify a mobile phone operator (carrier) using the GSM, UMTS, LTE (telecommunication)|LTE, and Integrated Digital Enhanced Network|iDEN public land mobile networks as well as some CDMA, Terrestrial Trunked Radio|TETRA, and satellite mobile networks.
48
Mobile country codes The following tables contain the complete list of mobile phone operators. Country information, including ISO alpha-2|ISO country codes is provided for completeness.
49
Mobile country codes The ITU-T Recommendation E.212 defines mobile country codes as well as mobile network codes, and you may want to visit that list if technical correctness is a concern (for example: MNC of 001 is not the same as MNC of 01), or if you are looking for a normative reference. Note, though, that the official list may not contain disputed territories such as Abkhazia or Kosovo or additional details about bands or operator names.

Inmarsat is a satellite-based communications provider, but it is primarily a maritime service and is not generally considered part of the GMSS.
53
Global Mobile Satellite System - Satellite numbers outside the GMSS country code
Globalstar usually allocates subscribers with a local number in the country they are based rather than using their GMSS country code.
54

56
The Country Code 'The Country Code', 'The Countryside Code' and 'The Scottish Outdoor Access Code' are sets of rules for visitors to rural, and especially agricultural, regions of the United Kingdom. The Country Code dates back to the 1930s; the Countryside Code replaced it in 2004.
57
The Country Code - The original rules
The Country Code evolved from the work of various organisations and had several different versions from the 1930s. The most widely accepted version of The Country Code was published in 1981 by Countryside Agency|The Countryside Commission:
58
The Country Code - The original rules
*Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
59
The Country Code - The original rules
*Guard against all risk of fire

65
The Country Code - The original rules
In the 1960s and 70s the Country Code was publicised by several public information films on television.
66
The Country Code - The Countryside Code
In 2004 The Country Code was revised and relaunched as 'The Countryside Code' ('Côd Cefn Gwlad' in Welsh) to reflect the introduction of new open access rights and changes in society over the preceding years. The revised Code was produced through a partnership between the Countryside Agency and the Countryside Council for Wales:

77
Inmarsat - Country codes
The other four country codes corresponded to the areas that Inmarsat satellites cover (normally one satellite per area). These areas were commonly called Ocean Regions. With the advent of SNAC on 870, the older country codes were no longer needed. They were formally phased out on 31 December 2008 but may still be routed by some regional carriers.

International Networks (country code)
'International Networks' is the name given by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to List of country calling codes|country calling codes 882 and 883, and serves as a catch-all for telephone services not dedicated to a single country. Satellite telephone carriers, especially those with worldwide service, are allocated within the Global Mobile Satellite System (GMSS), country code 881, with the exception of non-terrestrial Inmarsat, country code 870.
87
International Networks (country code)
As in the other such shared country codes, carriers are allocated number space within this code space plus their identification code (two-digit number in 882 code space, three or four digit number in 883 code space). The phone number for a subscriber of such a service will start with '+882'/'+883' followed by the carrier code.
88

An internationalized country code is similar to a GeoTLD, with two differences: it is a domain used exclusively for a sovereign state. The other difference is that an internationalized country code is considered a ccTLD and not a GeoTLD. More free geographic ccTLD have been applied for and will be active in 2013.
