2 Heritage Middle School
Target Audience Heritage Middle School 7th Grade Mathematics This lesson is taught after students have a basic understanding of geometric figures and properties. This lesson is intended for middle school students.

3 Essential Questions Big idea
How can objects be described and compared using geometric attributes? How are geometric shapes used in everyday objects? Why is mathematics used in art and architecture? Big idea The rules of Geometry can be applied to everyday life.

4 objectives Students will investigate the use of geometric shapes and solids in architecture, art and nature using the photographs provided. Students will look through printed material and the internet to identify their own examples. Students will take photographs containing examples and present them to the class. Students will draw or construct their own images.

5 Prerequisite skills Students can name and classify polygons and 3D objects. Students can describe their vertices, edges, faces, and geometric properties. Students are familiar with a variety of geometric concepts: Symmetry Parallel and Perpendicular lines Proportionality Students can name and classify angles.

6 lesson Examine photographs of buildings, art, nature, and everyday objects. Find and name geometric figures and properties using correct vocabulary. Locate additional examples on the internet, in books, magazines or newspapers. Include verbal descriptions of geometric properties. Students will take their own photographs of everyday objects with these properties and present to the class. As a culminating activity, students will create models and diagrams that use geometric figures and properties.

7 1. Spaceship earth - Epcot center Students recognize this structure as a sphere made up of triangles. Brightness and contrast to make the triangles more pronounced.

2. Stained glass art Students describe angles, polygons, circles and the use of symmetry. Zoom and crop to focus on angles in center circle.

9 3. M.c. Escher art Students will note use of patterns and symmetry – discuss tessellations
Change color to highlight patterns.

10 4. Infrared saturn Students recognize a sphere and an elliptical orbit.
Color and background edits.

11 5. Natural beauty Attractiveness and beauty is often studied scientifically using measures of facial symmetry. Purple hair… still beautiful!

12 6. The great pyramid As its name suggests… students identify a square pyramid.
Enhanced color and removed tourists.

13 7. Nature Students will note angles, symmetry, properties of circles and isosceles triangles.
Black and white photo makes shapes and angles stand out.

14 8. Taj Mahal Students identify shapes and solids, but most important perfect symmetry. Further discussion includes which axes of symmetry are present. Sharpen color and add lines to discuss symmetry over specific axes.

15 9. Everyday objects Students recognize cylinders as common shapes for packaging.

16 10. parthenon Students should study both photographs and take note of the proportionality of the structure. Cropped for students to see proportions in greater detail.
