Bay of Pigs Cuban Missile Crisis Created the Peace Corps and Alliance for Progress Programs that sent American humanitarian volunteers and aid to poorer nations. This also had the goal of containing Communism by spreading American influence abroad Continued the nuclear arms buildup Flexible Response Strengthened conventional American forces so the nation would have other options other than nuclear weapons

Used the media to his advantage to build his image His young family became iconic and beloved American celebrities Was an excellent Chief of State, opening the White House, and appealing to the people

7 The Space Program The New Frontier: Kennedy’s goal to improve life for many Americans in poverty, and also his focus on the exploration of space Congress opposed most all of Kennedy’s attempts at Democratic legislation, but he was able to grow the Space Program Khrushchev claimed the Soviet lead in space showed the superiority of Communism In 1961 Kennedy set the goal of sending an American to the moon “before this decade is out” 1969- The US became the first nation to put a man on the moon

8 Kennedy Assassination
Campaigning for his re-election, Kennedy traveled to Texas in 1963 On Nov 22nd, Kennedy rode in a motorcade through the city of Dallas to the site where he was to deliver a speech and was shot Within hours Vice President Johnson was sworn in as President His tragic death shocked the nation and the world Lee Harvey Oswald, who had connections to the Soviet Union and Cuba, was arrested for the assassination Two days later, he was shot and an investigation was launched into the assassination called the Warren Commission It was now up to his successor to carry on his work
