1 REPENT! Acts 17:30

2 Repentance is NOT: Just Being Sorry- 2 Corinthians 7:10
Repentance cannot be the same thing which produces it {sorry}. There is a sorrow that does NOT produce repentance {sorrow of the world}. “Sorry I got caught” Godly Sorrow Truly Mourns the FACT OF SIN! Awareness of fact that ALL SIN IS AGAINST God – Genesis 39:9; Luke 15:18,21

3 Repentance is NOT: Simply a Change of Action Matthew 21:28,29
Difference between REPENTANCE & the ACTION! Not the same, ONE PRODUCES THE OTHER! Matthew 3:8 Actions Befitting or Suitable to REPENTANCE! Actions are the RESULT of REPENTANCE – Not the REPENTANCE ITSELF!

4 What Then Is Repentance?
REPENTANCE IS: To Change One’s Mind – change of WILL! Hebrews 12:17 Sought a Change in His Father’s Mind Commanded by God- Acts 17:30,31 For ALL MEN – None Exempt Acts 2:38; 3:19

5 What Then Is Repentance?
REPENTANCE IS: A Cause for Rejoicing Luke 15:10,7 Faithful Rejoice with Angels also What Christ Came to Call us to Luke 5:32 “call sinners to repentance” Luke 24:46,47 “repentance & remission of sins preached” Acts 2:38

6 For Alien Sinner – Repentance Is:
A Complete Change of Mind Regarding All Sin Acts 2:38 “what shall we do?” – “REPENT!” “Change their minds & be dipped for the forgiveness of their transgressions.” (lit.) Acts 17:30 “all men everywhere are to REPENT!” No specific sins, but ALL SIN! A Change of Loyalty – Romans 6:17,18 IF we repent, we will OBEY!

7 Studied Conclusion on Repentance
Failure to properly understand repentance with regard to the alien sinner has been one of the underlying causes of superficial service among professed Christians. Total change of Mind = Hate All Sin! 1 John 1:7 “walk in the light” 1 John 3:9 “does not {practice} sin” IF we TRULY REPENT – we will Love God with ALL OUR HEARTS & our lives will RADIATE LOYAL, UNQUESTIONING SERVICE TO HIM!

8 Two Extremes on Repentance:
1. Alien sinner led to believe he must be able to enumerate every sin he has ever committed, and repent of each sin! 2. It matters not what may have been done prior to obeying the gospel – once baptized everything sinful before will be righteous in God’s eyes! Neither of these represent the TRUTH!

9 Two Extremes on Repentance:
1. Bible does not say a person must know EVERY SIN they have ever committed, & repent of EACH ONE before being baptized. Virtually IMPOSSIBLE! 2. Anything Unrighteous before baptism, is suddenly Righteous after baptism? Justify everything from Unscriptural Remarriages to Ill-gotten Gain!

10 Two Extremes on Repentance:
1. Bible does not say a person must know EVERY SIN they have ever committed, & repent of EACH ONE before being baptized. Virtually IMPOSSIBLE! Nothing about brethren in Corinth enumerating their former sins, and repenting of each one in particular! Apparent they forsook such sins according to 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

11 Two Extremes on Repentance:
2. Anything Unrighteous before baptism, is suddenly Righteous after baptism? Justify everything from Unscriptural Remarriages to Ill-gotten Gain! What about sexual deviates in Corinth? When “washed, sanctified & justified” did they continue in their same sinful relationships? 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

12 Two Extremes on Repentance:
For The Erring Christian – Repentance means a CHANGE OF MIND REGARDING SPECIFIC SINS – Acts 8:22 “repent therefore of this your wickedness” Revelation 2:5 “repent and do the first works” IF we truly hate our sins, we will not likely find ourselves falling into them again.

13 Fully Define Repentance:
A Change of Will caused by Sorrow for Sin, which leads to a Reformation of Life. IF it stops short of a reformation of Life, it is Not the Repentance that Pleases God! No one can “continue in sin” and say that they have repented Romans 6:1,2 Matthew 21:28,29 What if he REPENTED & DIDN’T GO? He really didn’t REPENT!

14 Fully Define Repentance:
Prodigal Sn in Luke Chapter 15 Vs. 17 “I will arise & go to my father,” Vs. 20 “he arose and came to his father” What if he “came to himself,” said that he would say these things to his father, but DIDN’T? Would he have REPENTED? Of course Not! Change of MIND must be followed by ACTIONS consistent with that change!

15 Try This One: Man embezzles 5 Million Dollars Does NOT get caught!
Learns Gospel, hears he must repent What should he DO about that $5 Million? Can he TRULY repent & KEEP that which does NOT belong to him? A “change of heart, i.e. repentance, DEMAND restitution in so far as it is humanly possible!

16 Will You Repent? Outside of Christ- Erring Child of God-
Change mind toward SIN as a result of FAITH in JESUS CHRIST, confess HIS NAME & be BAPTIZED for the remission of your sins! Erring Child of God- Change your mind toward SPECIFIC SINS which you have committed, & ask for God’s forgiveness 2 Peter 2:20-22
