4 The Navy – after A-Levels
Once you’ve completed your A-levels or equivalent qualifications, the Royal Navy offers a fantastic fully funded in-service degree programme, which you complete alongside your initial officer training while you are already being paid. 1. Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) With the DTUS you can study an approved maths, physics or engineering based subject at university and then join the Royal Navy as an Engineer Officer. Every year we sponsor just 70 students through their studies. If you are selected as one of them, you will be paid £4,000 a year throughout your degree course. While you’re studying you’ll still be a civilian and enjoy a full and active university life. All you need to do for the Royal Navy is complete at least 45 training days each year – including weekly training nights during term-time. There are also some military attachments and exercises during Easter and summer holidays. You'll receive additional pay of up to £1,500 for this training in addition to your bursary. When you graduate, you’ll have a guaranteed place at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) to begin your initial training as an Engineer Officer. You will need to complete at least three years in the service once you’ve finished your professional training. 2. Military Aviation Academy If you’re an aspiring Aircrew Officer and join the Royal Navy straight from school or college you will be awarded a fully-funded Foundation Degree in Military Aviation Studies from the Open University on successful completion of your flying training at the Military Aviation Academy. You’ll be on a full salary while you study and have no tuition fees to pay. When you have achieved your foundation degree, you have the option to self study to achieve the further credits you need for a fully-funded BA Hons or BSc Hons degree in Military Aviation Studies. 3. In-service degree for non-Engineer Officers If you join the Royal Navy straight from school or college as a Warfare, Hydrographic and Meteorology, or Logistics Officer, you will be awarded a mandated Foundation Degree in Maritime Studies or Maritime Science from Plymouth University on completion of your professional training (Phase 1 and 2). You then have the option to enrol on the Route to Honours programme which will result in a fully funded BSc Hons in Defence Studies or Maritime Science.  As with the Aircrew foundation degree, you’ll be earning a good salary while you study and have no tuition fees to pay.

5 If you wish to study for a degree prior to joining the Royal Navy or Royal Marines, or your chosen career entry requirements stipulate a degree, you can also be awarded financial help.  BURSARIES If you’re planning to go to university, you can apply for one of our bursary schemes. You’ll then be known as a Bursar, during which time you will still be a civilian while studying. You’ll need to spend part of your summer holidays training with us and getting to know the Royal Navy or Royal Marines. There are two kinds of bursaries: Standard bursary These are available to those wanting to join the Royal Marines or the Warfare, Logistics or Fleet Air Arm branches of the Royal Navy as an officer.  The bursary is to help with the costs of studying any subject at any UK university and is currently £1,500 per year. Technical bursary If you want to study for an accredited maths, physics or engineering based degree at a non-DTUS university and want to join the Royal Navy as an Engineer Officer, you can apply for a technical bursary, currently worth £4,000 a year.

8 RAF sponsorship through university
The RAF holds an annual national competition for RAF Scholarships to attract high quality candidates towards a full-time career in the RAF. These scholarships provide financial assistance towards education and developing personal qualities. They’re only available for applicants who have completed their A levels and are interested in pursuing one of the following roles after completing their education: Pilot (Officer); Air Traffic Controller (Officer & Senior Non-Commissioned Officer); Aerospace Battle Manager (Officer), Intelligence (Officer); and Logistics (Officer). The closing date for applications is early December. Contact us for further details and to find out if you’re eligible to apply. Students and Undergrads If you think you’ve got what it takes to be an Officer in the RAF, you could receive a sponsorship through sixth form and even University. Competition is tough though so you’ll need to show a real commitment to your studies and a potential future in the RAF. Medical Sponsorship If you’re studying at or applying for medical school and willing to serve at least six years in the RAF, we could sponsor your medical training. As part of this sponsorship you would receive a bursary or a cadetship, which leads to a career as a Royal Air Force Medical Officer. Engineering Sponsorship The RAF offers a range of engineering sponsorships to support engineering education for those interested in becoming Engineer Officers in the RAF. Get in touch or contact a RAF Senior Careers Liaison Officer via the careers staff at your school or college for details about this opportunity. Technical Officer Sponsorship The Defence Technical Officer and Engineer Scheme provides education support to students interested in a full-time career as an Engineer Officer or Technical Officer. To promote personal development and leadership, it provides sixth form college or University academic support alongside adventurous training and sports.
