3 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Experience: Explore the habitat, life and adaptations of this native Texas bird with Imagination Fort Worth and the Texas Wildlife Association. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

4 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Experience: Texas Wildlife Association will host this exciting program at The Dixon Watershed’s Bear Creek Unit. Learn more about the ranch here: Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

5 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Experience: The 2,100-acre Bear Creek Unit is located in Parker County, southwest of Fort Worth. Their grazing methods restored the tall-grass prairie and riparian forest making it an excellent location for wildlife education. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

6 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Experience: Texas Wildlife Association’s program includes 3 stations: Station 1: Necropsy- 1 hour demonstration on a bobwhite quail. A necropsy is a dissection of the dead body of an animal. In essence, it is an autopsy performed on an animal. Necropsies can help us learn more about the biology of an animal, how it is affected by disease or how human interactions may impact animals. Watch a quail necropsy: Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

7 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Experience: Texas Wildlife Association’s program includes 3 stations: Station 2: Quail CSI- 30 minute interactive lesson. With this activity students will learn about the predators of the quail. Students will seek to find out: Who attacked the nest? Watch an example: Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

8 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Experience: Texas Wildlife Association’s program includes 3 stations: Station 3: “Run for your Life”- 30 minute interactive lesson. With this activity students will learn about quail survival. Students will “forage” in ever decreasing amounts of escape cover while both avian (bird) and mammalian (animal) predators loom nearby. Learn about avian predators: Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

9 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Introduction: More about the Bobwhite Quail The northern bobwhite or bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) is a ground-dwelling bird native to the US, Mexico & the Caribbean. The name “bobwhite” derives from its characteristic whistling call. Despite its secretive nature, the northern bobwhite is one of the most familiar quails because it is frequently the only quail in its range. There are 21 subspecies of bobwhite, and many of the birds are hunted extensively as game birds. 10 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Introduction: More about the Bobwhite Quail: Vocalizations: The clear whistle "bob-WHITE" or "bob-bob-WHITE" call is very recognizable. The syllables are slow and widely spaced, rising in pitch a full octave from beginning to end. Listen to the bobwhite quail’s call: Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

11 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Introduction: More about the Bobwhite Quail Behavior: Like most game birds, the northern bobwhite is shy and elusive. When threatened, it will crouch and freeze, relying on camouflage to stay undetected, but will flush into low flight if closely disturbed. It is generally solitary or paired early in the year, but family groups are common in the late summer and winter roosts may have two dozen or more birds in a single covey. 12 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Enrichment: Of Birds and Texas: The Art of Stuart and Scott Gentling Of Birds and Texas is a book produced by Fort Worth artists Stuart & Scott Gentling. Acclaimed as “the most magnificent book ever produced in Texas” it has more than 50 images of native Texas birds along with accompanying text by the Gentling twins. Find the book online: Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

13 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Enrichment: Of Birds and Texas: The Art of Stuart and Scott Gentling Born in Rochester, Minnesota in 1942, the Gentling twins relocated to Fort Worth, Texas at age 5. The brothers often collaborated on works and were creative partners throughout their entire careers as artists and writers. Stuart passed away in 2006, Scott passed away in 2011. 14 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Enrichment: Of Birds and Texas: The Art of Stuart and Scott Gentling After successful local sales of their bird paintings, the Gentlings dreamed up the idea of creating a modern-day, Texas-specific version of Audubon’s Birds of America. In 1983, they began travelling the state to draw the state’s most beloved birds in their natural settings. By 1984, they were running out of money. The brothers mortgaged the home they shared; their mother also mortgaged her home. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

15 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Enrichment: Of Birds and Texas: The Art of Stuart and Scott Gentling Still needing more money the twins put up a rare and valuable painting from their personal collection as collateral for a bank loan. Eventually an original painting of boat-tailed grackles by John James Audubon (on the right) had to be sold. In 1987, Sotheby’s arranged the sale, the winning bid was $253,000. The total cost of The Of Birds and Texas project was $850,000. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

16 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Enrichment: Of Birds and Texas: The Art of Stuart and Scott Gentling One of the birds the Gentling brothers studied and painted was the topic of our study today, the Northern Bobwhite Quail. The bobwhite quail is featured on page 162 of their book. Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

17 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Project: Of Birds and Texas- Written Analysis -Predatory or Docile Northern Mockingbird House Wren Mourning Dove Take a look at the Gentling brother’s images of Texas birds on this slide and on the next. Based on the surroundings which slide shows predatory birds and which slide shows docile birds like the bobwhite quail we are studying? Write about your observations. 18 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Project: Of Birds and Texas: Written Analysis -Predatory or Docile Red-Shouldered Hawk Flammulated Owl Crested Caracara How can you tell which birds are predatory based on the Gentling’s images? Do they give us clues in the animal’s habitat to help us determine which birds are predatory and which are docile? Experience Introduction Enrichment Projects About Us IFW Donors

19 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Project: Bird Adaptations- Building your own birds Explore the link below that explains many bird adaptations. Take into consideration why a beak is shaped the way it is for what the bird eats, why it’s feet are the way they are for where it lives, etc. Take notes to help you decide what adaptations your bird will need. 20 The Life & Death of the Bobwhite Quail
Project: Bird Adaptations- Building your own birds Create your own bird: Be creative with your new bird Consider what it eats. Where it lives. What color it would be. Come up with a fun name for your bird. You can either draw/paint this new bird or create a bird sculpture, be sure to include its habitat.
