Meat Inspection System in Great Britain
The British Government through the Food Standards Agency subcontracts veterinary companies to carry out the meat inspection The meat industry pays FSA the inspection fees, and the FSA pays the veterinary companies although most slaughterhouses have considerable discounts and the Government pays a significant percentage of the costs

Food Standards Agency The work available in slaughterhouses and cutting plants is assigned through a tender process carried out every 3 years with possibility of extension to 5. The decision to award the contracts on the last tender was based on quality (70%) and price (30%). In the last tender in 2017, Eville & Jones was given the whole of England and Wales. FSA carries out several audits of contractors to ensure the standard of services

The Meat Hygiene Inspector - skills
Working as a Meat Hygiene Inspector or Official Auxiliary requires specific skills and agility. You must be observant, have a good attention to detail and be assertive but fair. This job requires early starts, flexible hours and sometimes challenging environments. Full training is provided for inspection and other controls but you must be willing to take on the challenge!

Requirements to work as OV
To become an OV it is necessary to: be a full member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons hold the appropriate Official Controls Qualification (Veterinary) be appointed to act as an OV- completion of a University course (organised and paid for by Eville & Jones) OV duties will cover a range of controls in the plant: ante-mortem, inspection team, sampling, exports, HACCP, SRM, storage and transport…

Other opportunities - Vaccination clinic
Vaccination clinics provide low cost veterinary services mainly in pet shops throughout the country (50 and growing). Fully qualified vets attend the clinics to provide full health checks. No appointment is necessary, clinics are organised mainly in the afternoon lasting from 2 to 5 hours, depending on demand. These clinics can be covered as part of your OV/ MHI work or you could choose to be solely dedicated to the clinics (generally with export work during mornings).

Candidate Requirements
Good standard of written and spoken English. Strong personality. Open minded to changes and flexibility. Full current car driving licence and driving experience, minimum of 6 months. Computer skills. Commitment for at least nine months with the company.

Recruitment RCVS registration (general for EU nationals):
Completed Initial Enquiry Form for EU Graduates (This can be downloaded from the RCVS page). A photocopy of the identifying page and outside front cover of your valid passport or your EU identity card; or evidence that you are a Community rights entitled person. An A4 photocopy of your formal EU veterinary qualification certificate as issued by the university in its original language, and also a certified English translation where necessary. Payment in full of your initial registration fee. A letter or certificate of good standing (evidence of your good character).

Training Period If you have no experience: full training is provided (usually for MHI, 1 week of theory and 3 or 4 for practical training). Accommodation is provided during training and mileage is paid for. Subsistence allowance: £5 per day during the theoretical training in Leeds (lunch provided) £10 per day during the practical training

Conditions Of Employment as VMHI
MHIs Your rate of pay will be £9.50 per hour before income tax deductions, increasing to £10.00 per hour after six months service and £10.25 per hour after 12 months service. After income tax and national insurance contributions, this equates per year, based on a 40 hour working week, to: £9.50 per hour equates to £19,760 per year (before tax deductions of 15.8%) £10.00 per hour equates to £20,800 per year (before tax deductions of 16.5%) £10.25 per hour equates to £21,320 per year (before tax deductions of 16.9%) You will be guaranteed 35 hours per week. Your salary will be paid on a four weekly basis. i.e. 40 hours a week with a rate of £9.50 per hour, it will be £ a year before taxes.

OV Course OV Course lasts 3 weeks
Glasgow and Bristol Universities run at least two courses per year Course fee (£3,000) and accommodation are arranged and fully covered by the company NOV training is co-ordinated by experienced tutors

Conditions Of Employment – NOV/OV
