About GHC MISSION: To provide education, advocacy, mental health and other health services, to underserved and marginalized populations as an act of social justice with a specialization in gender and sexual identities. VISION: Gender Health Center is focused on providing an accessible therapy and counseling program for the gender variant community. We are interested in developing a collaboration with other agencies that are committed to addressing the full spectrum of issues specific to the transgender community in a positive approach for getting people to understand that there is a better life when gender identity issues are addressed in a safe and supportive environment. BACKGROUND: Gender Health Center was originally the vision of one motivated and compassionate MFT graduate who saw a need in an underserved community and wanted to create a place where they can feel free to be themselves and get comfortable, affordable and non-judgmental counseling. Danelle E. Saldana, M.A., MFT began the daunting task of forming the project in April of Her plan was vivid and nearly complete right from the start and a lot of prep work was done fairly quickly. She worked tirelessly on the GHC writing letters, making projections, and creating processes until she unexpectedly passed away in her sleep at 30 years old in early 2009. Plans for the GHC stopped. When other members of the community found out about this, they quickly jumped on board to finish the work that Danelle started. Community members met on a monthly basis as the interest for making this project all happen grew and grew. The planning finally came to completion early in 2010 allowing us to open our doors to the public on July 7, 2010. We did our best to stick to Danelle’s dream and could not have done it without her detailed plans. She was a gifted therapist who impacted others far more than she realized. Her own happiness embraced the happiness of others. She will be missed but never forgotten.

Counseling Services Counseling Sliding Scale Fee Narrative Therapy
At Gender Health Center our counseling services focus on client-based narrative therapy which utilizes the power of people’s personal stories. Clients are encouraged, through a respectful and cooperative relationship, to address the issues in their lives that exist amidst social, political, and cultural storylines. Sliding Scale Fee $10 - $60 per session. 81% pay $10 or less Narrative Therapy Narrative Therapy is a method of therapy that attempts to separate the person from the issue. It is used as a form of community work and counseling and encourages people to rely on their own skill sets to minimize the issues that exist in their everyday lives. It holds the belief that a person’s identity is formed by our experiences or narratives. Because the issue is seen as a separate entity from the person, a therapist can help a client externalize sensitive issues. This objectification dissipates resistance and defenses and allows a client to address this entity in a more productive manner. Intern Counselors One way that GHC is able to meet the needs of those individuals and families who would otherwise not be able to obtain counseling services is by utilizing graduate level interns from local university counseling programs. Our counselors are in the process of completing or have completed their masters’ degrees in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, and social work. They are working on their required hours, under the supervision of our Clinical Director, Dr. David Nylund, to gain their license to practice.

Emotional Considerations
Fear of Potential Consequences Such as loss of the support of family and friends, harassment, violence, and loss of employment and/or housing Questioning the Decision Sometimes when a loss of support is experienced a person may feel as if they do not deserve to transition, or ask friends to accept their decision and will reconsider or hold off their transition. Coming Out By the time an employee discusses this with an employer in most cases they have already been dealing with these factors for years, have reconsidered this many times, and have waited until they feel it is their last option for happiness.
12
Employment Protections
AB 196 – Gender Nondiscrimination Bill (2003) … "Sex" also includes, but is not limited to, a person's gender, as defined in Section of the Penal Code ["Gender" includes a person's gender identity and gender related appearance and behavior whether or not stereotypically associated with the person's assigned sex at birth.] AB 887 – Gender Nondiscrimination Act (2012) “gender identity and expression” is its own protected category at work, at school, in housing, at public accommodations and in other settings. Anti-Discrimination Policies Employer and landlord policies and practices must incorporate the needs and experiences of transgender people in order to comply with state law. Aside from meeting the legal duties clarified by AB 196, updating such policies make for a better working or living environment, demonstrate respect for diversity, alleviate wasteful and counterproductive stress, and set clear standards for workplace and living environment behavior. Other areas of protection include: • Names and Pronouns • Restroom Accessibility • Dress Codes • Sex Segregated Job Assignments • Training
13
Names and Pronouns Please ask for and honor their preferred name and spelling. Legal name change is not required to honor this on name badges, personnel files, addresses, name plates, company directories, etc… Please ask what pronoun the person prefers. (i.e. he, she, they, or something else). Then address the employee this way and require others that are aware of the transition to do the same. Misgendering (using the wrong pronoun) is very hurtful to a trans person and could lead to depression, lowered productivity, and even thoughts of hopelessness. If the employee is consistently addressed in the wrong pronoun and/or name and it appears intentional this may put the employer at risk for a discrimination claim.
14
How to Address People When You Don’t Know Their Gender Identity
15
Restroom Accessibility
Regardless of if the employee transitions on the job or is hired after they transition, they should be permitted to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity. Employers can offer a unisex bathroom. Keep in mind that transgender employees are not required to use a gender neutral bathroom, and employer cannot deny access to a restroom that the employee identifies with. If a coworker objects, the employer could bring to their attention that this employee has the same rights to the restroom as all other employees in the company. Also, offer the gender neutral restroom to anyone who feels uncomfortable sharing a restroom.
16
Dress Codes What does your policy say?
Employers are entitled to enforce and apply dress codes for each gender or a general dress code that applies to everyone. The same dress code rules apply to transgender employees that would apply to the gender that they identify with. The same rule applies to uniforms.
17
Sex Segregated Job Assignments
AB 196 does not prohibit an employer from making job assignments based on sex so long as those assignments are otherwise in compliance with state law. However, in most cases, transgender employees must be classified and assigned in a manner consistent with their gender identity.

My Story Rachael Hudson

Cisgender Privilege Can you be guaranteed to find a public bathroom that is safe for you to use? Can you expect that others will not try to dehumanize you by jokingly or seriously calling you ‘it’? Are you able to discuss your childhood without disguising your gender? Is your gender considered to be a shame on your family? Are incidental parts of your identity defined as a mental illness? Can you undress in a public change room without risk of being assaulted or reported? Can you wear a socially acceptable bathing suit? Does the state of your genitals cause you to fear violence should they be discovered? Can you freely use a credit card in a grocery store without being asked for government issued ID or being accused of using stolen finances? Can you expect to find a landlord willing to rent to someone of your gender? Can you expect that your gender identity will not be used against you when applying for employment? Do people assume that they can ask and have a right to hear about your intimate medical history or future?
