2. Africa’s Agenda 2063 What is Agenda 2063?
It is a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years. It builds on, and seeks to accelerate the implementation of past and existing continental initiatives for growth and sustainable development.
Some of the past and current initiatives it builds on include:
the Lagos Plan of Action
The Abuja Treaty,
The Minimum Integration Programme,
the Programme for Infrastructural Development in Africa (PIDA),
the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP),
The New partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD),
Regional Plans and Programmes and National Plans.

3. The African Aspirations for 2063
Agenda 2063 as seven aspirations:
A Prosperous Africa, based on inclusive growth and sustainable development
An integrated continent, politically united, based on the ideals of Pan Africanism and the vision of Africa’s Renaissance
An Africa of good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law
A Peaceful and Secure Africa
Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, values and ethics
An Africa whose development is people driven, relying on the potential offered by people, especially its women and youth and caring for children
An Africa as a strong, united, resilient and influential global player and partner

5. What is the Purpose of the First-Ten Year Implementation Plan?
Identify priority areas, set specific targets, define strategies and policy measures required to implement the first ten-year plan of Agenda 2063.
Bring to fruition of the Fast Track programmes and initiatives outlined in the Malabo Decisions of the AU to provide the big push and breakthroughs for Africa’s economic and social transformation.
Provide information to all key stakeholders at the national, regional and continental levels the expected results/outcomes for the first ten years of plan and the roles
Assign responsibilities to all stakeholders in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Outline the strategies required to ensure availability of resources and capacities together with citizen’s engagement in the implementation of the First Ten Year Plan.

6. AU’s Strategic Plan:
The Strategic plan has eight (8) prioritiess
DREA’s work under Priority No 2: Expand agricultural production, developing the Agro-processing and businesses sectors, increase market access and attain Agrica’s collective self-sufficiency and nutrition through promotion of smallholder agriculture, sound environment and climate change and natural resource management

7. DREA’s work in Agenda 2063 Most of DREA’s work is under Aspiration 1:
Modern agriculture for increased production, productivity and value addition contributes to farmer and national prosperity and Africa’s collective food security
…hand hoe will be banished by 2025 and the sector will be modern, profitable and attractive to the continent’s youths and women.
…environment and ecosystems, including its wildlife and wild lands are healthy, valued and protected, with climate resilient economies and communities
Africa’s Blue/ocean economy, which is three times the size of its landmass, shall be a major contributor to continental transformation and growth….
Africa shall address the global challenge of climate change by prioritizing adaptation in all our actions….
Africa shall have equitable and sustainable use and management of water resources….

8. DREA’s Mandate
The Department’s mandate is to boost AU Member States’ rural economic development and agricultural productivity by supporting the adoption of measures, strategies, policies and programmes on agriculture.
Key tasks are to:
develop programmes ensuring food security;
promote rural communities’ initiatives and transfer of technologies;
coordinate efforts to eradicate poverty and combat desertification and drought;
promote agricultural products by small-scale producers;
support the harmonisation of policies and strategies between the RECs; and
initiate research on climate change, water and sanitation management.

9. DREA’s Strategic Plan: 2014-2017
Vision: a transformed agriculture that guarantees food and nutrition security and equitable growth for all citizens while ensuring sound environment management and sustainable us of natural resources
Mission: to develop and promote the implementation of policies and strategies aimed at strengthening African agriculture and sound environmental management
