Welcome to the “History through Film” class
Welcome to the “History through Film” class. This course examines American history, culture, and society during the 20th/21st century through film.

For the next 9 weeks, you will be watching a series of historically-based films that will supplement what you are learning in your US History class this year. Your challenge is to watch these films like a historian - using analysis, critical thinking, and research skills to learn about the specific events being portrayed, while also determining the film’s historical accuracy.

Course Requirements Grading
This course is an enrichment of the US History standards that you will be learning this year. The work and assessments completed in this class may be a challenge; however, the intent is to increase your understanding of American history in order to develop significant critical thinking skills that will help you be successful in high school. 90%- Assessments 10%- Class Participation and practice assignments For each film that you watch: You will be required to complete an analysis form. You will complete research to determine its historical accuracy. You will engage in Socratic discussions with your teacher and fellow students analyzing the historical events. You will complete a series of assessments to evaluate your understanding of historical events.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To give students practical experience in critical analysis by evaluating full length feature films as historical evidence. 2. To integrate traditional, historical sources by exposing students to relevant, written material on past and present events. 3. To use film as a means of motivating students to study selected topics in United States history 4. To improve research and writing skills through critical thinking assignments on selected subjects that use film and traditional sources as evidence. 5. To impart an in-depth knowledge of major topics in US history.

During this quarter, you will be watching four films that will correspond to different units that you will studying in your US History class. Potential Expenses for 8th Grade
Mini Town This is a leadership training camp held in Prescott in February. All students are welcome to apply to this incredible opportunity. Applications available in November The fee is $185 and are due in January. Living History Trip Social Studies will be providing information about trip. The trip will take place second quarter The fee will be $297 and will be due two weeks prior to the trip. Sports Fall sports: cross country, boys soccer, and volleyball Winter sports: girls soccer, wrestling, boys basketball, girls softball, and spiritline. Spring sports: boys baseball, girls basketball, track & field. Fees range from $100 to $150 depending on the sport and are due when your student makes the team. Yearbook The cost of a standard yearbook is about $30 – the price goes up towards the end of the year. Baby Ad is available for $25. This would allow you to submit a baby or childhood picture of your child and a personalized message to be included in the yearbook. The deadline to order a Baby Ad is early January – more info will come out when school begins. (Baby Ads are only available to 8th grade students.) 8th Grade Promotion Dance The fee for this dance ranges from $5 to $10. Big Surf This 8th grade field trip will be the last week of school. The fee is $20 and includes lunch. Disneyland for choir and band students The trip is in early February Ms. Figueroa and Mrs. Werner will provide information about the requirements for the trip and the fees.
