What it’s like to be a Nursing Student?
In nursing school, you are given the opportunity to “layer” your learning, which helps prepare you to help others. Students start with classroom-based lectures where they learn the academic fundamentals. When it comes to tasks like injections, students are given the opportunity to practice their skills in a laboratory on simulation manikins and a IV computer based simulator. Nursing skills are practiced, honed and tested in a simulation lab setting, guided by skilled faulty nurses. By the time students reach clinical internships they are well-versed in the knowledge they need to be successful. Internships take place at hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics, which allow students to practice the skills they’ve developed in classes, and simulation labs in the real world. All of these steps are designed to prepare students for the national licensure examination (NCLEX). It is the final step to go from student to nurse and can be a formidable obstacle at the end of the road. Don’t let it deter you! Beyond the classroom, there are a lot of great NCLEX resources out there to get students past the hump. And MGCCC nursing program, provides NCLEX resources for student practice during their four semsters of nursing.

Support creates a foundation for success in nursing school
Nursing classes at MGCCC consist 40 to 50 students. They are designed to provide an intimate and adaptable learning experience. Students also go through their program as cohorts, learning together from their first class all the way until graduation. Going through the nursing program in a small cohort, is like finding your second family. By the time students graduate they are proud of their accomplishments, but it’s also “bittersweet” to leave their friends. This will be one of the first things you’ll notice about nursing classes. There is a closeness among the students but also between them, and the faculty as well. Nursing classes at MGCCC consist 40 to 50 students. Life of a MGCCC Nursing Student…
9
The faculty have your back until the end…
There is an old expression: “Those who cannot do, teach.” That really couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to the nursing faculty at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. MGCCC Nursing faculty are required to have experience in the field, and have a passion for nursing that runs deep. They go into teaching to pass on that passion to others. You’ll definitely have made some life-time friends along this journey through school, whether it be a professor or a fellow classmate. Word from our Award Winning Faculty

Today is your day … The message about the growing need for nurses is ringing loud and clear throughout the healthcare industry. Industry demand for registered nurses alone is expected to grow by 16 percent through 2024, according to Bureau Of Labor Statistics. (Statistics, 2016) Schools like MGCCC are hard at work training new nurses to fill this demand. The decision to go to school is not an easy one. It’s a huge investment that will affect you for years to come. When it comes to nursing, it’s a decision that will also have great impact on the lives of others. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly.

The Uniform: Professionalism
(Passmore, 2016) MGCCC Nursing Uniform Policy MGCCC Nursing Faculty & Administrators also hold students to a Higher Standard Although, health care workers may not wear white uniforms, the profession continues to represent purity, compassion, and integrity. “While uniforms alone do not make the professional, they go a long way in helping us to stand out, better allowing us to do what we do best: heal, teach, support, comfort, nurture, and save lives.” (Sue Tobin, 2016) Professional attire is a requirement for all MGCCC nursing students during clinical and pre-clinical experiences. Students Must wear the official uniform for clinical experiences, clinical lab days, and when visiting health care facilities to get patient information. Failure to comply will result in an unsatisfactory clinical grade and the student will be sent home. Held to a Higher Standard Florence Nightingale wore a white uniform White was considered a symbol of purity. Florence Nightingale Born Leader Confident Integrity Compassionate Intelligent Committed to excellence “She said the object and color in the materials around us actually have a physical effect on us, on how we feel.” (Brainy Quote, 2016)

Curriculum Clinical vs Theory
Philosophy built on the metaparadigm of Individual, Environment, Health, and Nursing. Incorporates the concepts of Learner, Educator, and the Nursing Education Process to unify the nursing curriculum. Constructs Client – centered care Interdisciplinary Evidence based practice Quality improvement Safety Informatics Client education Professionalism Clinical vs Theory Clinical 1:3 Ratio (180 contact hours per semester) Classroom, nursing lab or clinical facility “Hands on” learning Facilitates understanding of theory content Simulation Theory 1:1 Ratio (90 contact hours per semester) Usually occurs in the classroom setting May include active learning strategies Helps students understand health or disease process and “why” treatments are needed Five, Eight and/or Sixteen-week block schedules
