Hayes-Tilden Affair Leah Wallihan, Alec Lumsden, and Grace Savedge

2 Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Sam Tilden
Rutherford B. Hayes was replacing the highly controversial republican president, Ulysses S. Grant. Hayes was a very neutral, compromising type of politician. He also lacked the typical insider personality because he was the governor of Ohio, an uncommon state. Samuel Tilden was a well known democrat from the state of New York. Both politicians took polarizing views on issues stimulating the very divided nation.

3 Outcome of the 1876 election
The election ended up being very controversial because Tilden won 184 electoral votes compared to Hayes’ 165 electoral votes and 20 electoral votes had not come in from four states. The republicans and democrats compromised with each other when they voted that Hayes would be president and that republicans would have to send back troops from Florida. This continued be very controversial because Tilden won over 50% of the popular vote, which has never been seen again.
