-Union Pacific Railroad cheats the U.S. government
of $23 million
-Bribed several members of gov’t including
congressman, vice-president, speaker of
the House.

6. Whiskey Ring
-To pay for war, taxes go up on distillers
-distillers bribe tax collectors to allow them to
pay taxes on a minimum of the supply
-gov’t officials and Grant’s secretary get
involved and forge tax stamps
-Becomes a nationwide scandal

8. Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall
-Tammany Hall started as a social/political club
but became a political machine.
-”Boss” Tweed made millions of dollars through
corruption
-Took bribes for city contracts
-Took payoffs for city jobs
-Juggled city accounting books
-Bought votes for democrats by aiding poor
immigrants.
-Brought down by a NY Times reporters and cartoons
by Thomas Nast
