1 Upper Class Education

2 What is Upper Class Education?
Early in Victorian London any education was not required at all. It wasn’t until an Education act in 1880 that made school required ages 5-10 Children from the upper class received a better education than poor children Boys and girls did not always receive the same education

3 Upper Class Education Wealthy families often had a governess to teach their children until the age of ten when they were then sent to school. Rich families often sent their boys away to boarding schools after they turned ten though some public schools were available for them. Most girls remained in the home to continue to be taught by the governess. Girls were taught how to cook and sew and do tasks around the house, although some did go to boarding school.

4 How it connects to Great Expectations
Education had a heavy bearing on someone's social class. Pip had a lower class education before his Great Expectations and now that he is in a higher class, he also wants a higher education to match his social status. Pip believes that Estella will return his affection if his education is that of a a gentleman.

5 Questions Why did Pip want an upper class education?
What's the difference between upper and lower class education? Who taught kids before they were old enough to go to school? Why didn’t everyone go to school?
