4 Psychology degrees Need a science A level
Research areas at Sheffield include: Computational neuroscience: Designing computational models and robots based on how the brain works Systems neuroscience: Brain imaging eg. fMRI Development: e.g. Dyslexia and autism Behaviour change: health, lifestyle, environment

5 Clinical psychology Clinical psychologists treat mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders such as learning disabilities, substance abuse, depression, eating disorders. To work as a clinical psychologist you need: Psychology degree accredited by the British Psychological Society Relevant paid or voluntary work experience (6 to 12 months) - for example, as a psychology assistant or a caring role. A three year, full-time postgraduate doctorate in clinical psychology. Combines placement with training and research. Salaried £26K Some doctorates require a Masters first More diverse than realised: statistics, robotics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, brain pathology. Etc

6 Medical Physics Requires Maths and Physics A level
Usually offered as combined degree (Physics with…) so doesn’t limit career choice. Teaching from across Physics, Bioengineering and Medical Physics (Royal Hallamshire Hospital)

7 Teaching structure Standard physics modules plus:
Year 1. Physics of living systems – structure of skeleton, muscle; fluid dynamics of lungs and cardiovascular system Year 2. Medical imaging: CT, MRI, X-Ray, Nuclear medicine, coding and mathematical modelling in medicine. Year 3 and (optional) Year 4 . Medical physics research project. Hospital or industrial placement. 8 Career pathways • Train as a clinical scientist in the NHS.
Done via 3 year NHS scientist training programme (salaried £26K) Takes science & engineering graduates Specialise in one of many fields: medical physics, microbiology, clinical biochemistry, cardiac science….. Follow a career in industry: Pharmaceutical industry, medical devices, diagnostic and surgical equipment, medical sales, medical writing, statistics, • Pursue a career in research, initially by taking a higher degree an MSc or a PhD. Work in GP surgeries and hospitals Support doctors: Taking medical histories, performing examinations, analysing test results, some diagnosis. 2 year full time Diploma with placements A 2:1 or higher in a life sciences degree with BBB at A level New role so less awareness or mapped or career path

A-levels: two of Maths, Physics or Chemistry To make any engineered device, structure or product you need the right material. Materials Science modules - Biology & Chemistry of living systems, tissue structure and function, physiology of the musculoskeletal system. Specialise in Biomaterials… the study of materials engineering with human anatomy, physiology and cell biology. Learn about the healthcare applications of materials. Commercially available tissue engineered products – such as this example from a Sheffield spin-out company! To make any engineered device, structure or product you need the right material. Materials Science and Engineering is the study of all materials, from those we see and use everyday such as a glass or a piece of sport equipment to those used in aerospace and medicine. The future of medicine is in materials. As we try to live longer we are going to have to replace body parts (hip replacements). Looking at growing tissues and BIOACTIVE MATERIALS.

12 Career pathways Holly Askew Degree: BEng Materials Science and Engineering (Biomaterials) Job title: Production and Technical Scientist at Regenerys What organisation does: Production of innovative services and products for breast reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery and wound healing. Main responsibilities: The cleanroom on the production front, processing tissue and culture cells. I also work in the development of new and existing products. ‘Regenerys was conceived to develop, manufacture and market advanced, effective and safe products for use in regenerative medicine. Our vision is that our products and services will result in the improvement and restoration of the health, wellbeing and welfare of the company’s ultimate customer, the end recipient.’

13 Control & Systems Engineering A-levels: Maths and a Science
Control & Systems Engineering principles can be applied to medical & healthcare systems. Successful/Common applications of Sys. Engineering in the medical sector include devices like pacemakers and cochlear implants. Examples include: Assistive/Rehabilitation Devices, Bionic Eyes, Brain-Computer Interfaces.
