1 SUPPLETION Suppletion is the process of the replacement of whole form by another completely different form. Example: Past tense of regular verbs in English is formed by adding a suffix which we write as -ed as in played, kicked. However, there are two verbs in English which have suppletive forms in the past tense, which bear no relationship to the shape of the present tense. They are the verbs be and go. Present tense Past tense be (is/ am/ are) was/were go went

2 SUPPLETION (Cont……) There are also some adjectives in English which form their degree of comparation by suppletive forms. good → better → the best bad → worse → the worst ill → worse → the worst There is also one adjective in English that has suppletive form in forming adverb. good → well With a small number of very common verbs in Samoan, the plural forms are completely suppletive. Singular Plural alu a ‘go’ sau a mai ‘come’ momo’e taufetuli ‘run’
