1 MALREP a malaysian academic library repositories ZURAIDAH DARUS
Assalamualaikum and a very good morning. Today I would like to share with everyone about MALREP, a malaysian academic library repositories. But, before i went further, it is necessary for me to share a little bit information about the committee behind this product and it was Conferences of University Libraries and National Library of Malaysia (PERPUN). . Today as our focus will be on MALRep. Let me share with you a brief history on Institutional Repository in Malaysia. It was first build by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on 26th January 2007 using eprints and stored its intellectual content including research data. In order to ensure every other public universities have their own repository, PERPUN under one of its special interest group, Malaysian System Librarian (MySyL) has conducted series of workshop on building institutional repositories using eprints, once in Universiti Malaya and once in Universiti Utara Malaysia. As a result, there are growing numbers of repositories. To be exact, in total there are about twenty nine repositories from twenty five academic libraries. 24 using Eprints and 5 using Dspace. 6 INTRODUCTIONS 35 FORMAT Those twenty nine repositories consist of more than three hundred thousands material from thirty five formats, such as article, conference or workshop item, thesis and teaching resources. Some of it are required for institutional credentials, while some are available full text. However, these twenty nine repositories are without cross-institutional search mechanism. Therefore, Malaysian Academic Library Repositories (MALRep) came in place. Positioning Asia in the Global Movement of Open Science

MALREP Discovery services for academic libraries repositories under PERPUN. Malaysian Academic Library Repositories (MALRep) aim is to accumulate metadata from twenty nine repositories at a database, and enable those intellectual output to be search cross-institutionally through one platform. 8 TOOLS Open Access Software, Vufind build by Villanova University.
RedHat Enterprise Linux Operating System MySQL database PHP Programming Language Apache Solr Search Engine OAI-PMH Malaysian Academic Library Repositories (MALRep) was created using an open access software called Vufind, which was build by Villanova University. This services is using RedHat Enterprise Linux operating system, MySQL database and VuFind as an application system. Meanwhile, Blueprint CSS Framework was used to provide user interface for desktop and Bootstrap HTML, CSS, and JS Framework was used for mobile user. This application system was installed in UUM Data Centre virtual server. Apache HTTPD Server services used for web services, along with MySQL database and PHP programming language. (LAMP – Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Apache Solr together with LAMP is used as a search engine. **Solr is a reputable and fast search engine from Apache Lucene Project. It is able to perform full text searching, result display, faceted search and integration with databases.** Indexing process is using Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) that was build by Open Archives Initiative. FRAMEWORK Institutional Repository UTeM UIAM UiTM UM UKM USM UMS USIM UTP UMK UNIMAS UniSZA UTHM UUM MMU UniMAP UMT UniKL UTM OUM UniMAS UNITEN UMP UPM UPSI Data Provider OAI-PMH Harvest metadata from Data Provider and build index Service Provider MALREP (UUM) Next is how its work. OAI framework can be divided into two; data provider and service provider. Data provider supply metadata that will be harvested from each repository. In return, service provider will create value added services such as search interface. At a first phase, metadata from data provider was harvested, stored and ready to be index into Apache Solr. Latest harvested date is stored as it will be an indicator for when the record should be harvested until the current date. This method can reduce the load during the next indexing process. At the second phase of indexing, harvested metadata will be place into Apache Solr one by one to ensure every records are able to be indexed. Currently, metadata has been schedule to be harvested on weekly basis. At the moment, we were using manual approach in which one repository harvest at once. 10 INTERFACES And this is the user interface and how it works.
User may search using various access point such as title, author, subject, call number and ISBN/ISSN. A list of result will be displayed. As you can see, institution that own the item will be displayed and if data provider do have file(s) available in their repository, you will Positioning Asia in the Global Movement of Open Science

11 CHALLENGES Issue Solution XSLT Header Incorrect
Each university was asked to review and update their repository software. Time Out while harvesting This situation mostly occurred with a weak internet connection. It resulted in incomplete metadata harvesting. The only solution is to redo until the process is complete. High Memory Usage Increase memory and tuning the system when required Data Standardization University must work together on setting the data standard to enable effective searching. University Policy Metadata won’t be harvested if data provider didn’t allow it. Repository Address Changed Harvest and reindex again Positioning Asia in the Global Movement of Open Science

12 FUTURE PLANNING User Interface Promotion
Since it has been live, MALRep interface just having a slight changes, twice. Major user interface update will be done soon. It is our responsibilities to ensure that public aware of MALRep existence for their own benefit. Thus, we will be more proactive on promoting this effort through various medium.
