BASIC ANIMATION 1

2 DEFINITION Definition of Animation Animation?
The act of making something come alive. To animate means to give life to inanimate (still) object, image or drawing. The art of movement expressed with the images that are not taken directly from reality. Illusion of movement in animation is achieved by rapidly displaying many still images (frames) in sequence. 2

3 CHARACTERISTIC To make the “impossible” possible Viewing angle
Characters, lighting, angles – we can put anywhere and make them do whatever that we want. Environment – no limit as in where the action takes place. Does not involves real actors The actor are create using the imagination 3

Animation artist draws/paints on sheet of film (cel). The cels are layered over the background and photographed frame by frame 4

A film technique that involves shooting one frame at a time. 5

The technique of re-drawing live-action images on paper in order to capture natural motion in one’s animation. 6

8 THREE ACT STRUCTURE The BEGINNING The DEVELOPMENT (Act II)‏
A.k.a Act I Introduces the character & environment Set up events & situations that will develop into the story At the end of Act I, audience will be provided with a clear understandings of: Characters Key situation Central questions of the story (The Quest)‏ The DEVELOPMENT (Act II)‏ A.k.a climax This is where most of the actions happens Most challenging part in the story Must be ensured to engage enough so that the audience won’t lose the attention to the story. 8

9 THREE ACT STRUCTURE The ENDING Resolution of the story
Central question is finally answered Can also be followed by a brief aftermath/epilogue to ensure viewers that everything is okay again TRIVIA: Good ending is always memorable. 9

10 CHARACTER DESIGN Should contain the following view for each character:
Full-frontal view Half-frontal view Left-side view Right-side view Full-back view Half-back view for the full figure Key character poses Walk cycle (how the character walks)‏ Facial expressions + character mouth shapes for lip sync Size comparison 10

in the story - Center of the time/story Admired by the audience example: X-men 11

Guide hero to the right path Example: Xavier 12

13 THE CHARACTER 3. Shadow The bad guy A character whose mission
contradicts with the hero Hero’s enemy Example: Magneto 13

14 THE CHARACTER 4. Threshold Guardian
Lesser obstruction to the hero compared to the shadow To help build the hero by allowing him to grow a little at a time through conflicts Example: lex luthor 14

15 THE CHARACTER 5. Herald Often just brief appearances in the story
To issue challenge/call to adventure to the hero Example: Princess Fiona 15

A character that changes personalities & forms depending on situations Example:Gollum 16

18 STORYBOARD A sequence of images used to visualize the animation
To show motion & camera shots throughout the animation Provides visual layouts of events as they are to be seen through the camera lens Includes drawing & written information about every shot in the story Character composition & movement Camera shot Lighting details Dialogue Animatic: a moving version of the storyboard and is compiled to correctly establish the timing for each scene. 18

19 STORYBOARD SLUGGING The process which the instruction for the timing of character and camera movements and the exact positioning of the dialogue is written into the storyboard. The vehicle for successful exposure sheet production. Exposure sheet (x sheet): the universal compass for animators as it is a document that contains every piece of information to create the scene. 19
