HEAT By Thomas and Sanja

HEAT AND ENERGY Heat is a form of energy.
Heat can be used for; cooking food, putting metal into shape, warming your body and for electricity. The Earth’s most important heat and energy source is the Sun because without it, the world would have an ongoing Ice Age, we would never exist and there would be no way to produce energy.

THERMAL ENERGY Thermal energy is an energy that moves from one object to another by a direct movement of particles. Thermal energy can move through convection, conduction and radiation. Heat never flows from cooler objects to warmer objects.

USING A THERMOMETER In a thermometer there is a liquid that when it gets hot the liquid separates and goes up because that is the only direction it can go. When something is cold the liquid decreases because the particles slow down. The maximum temperature on a thermometer is 120 degrees Celsius and the lowest temperature is -30 degrees Celsius.

FLUID WARMTH When you put ice in a glass of water it may melt. This is because of the fluid and how warm it is. It depends on the size. If your ice block is big it will take longer to melt. If your ice block is small it will melt faster.

CONDUCTION Conduction is heat transferring from one object to another object by direct contact. Coldness does not go to the warm object, your body releases the heat and goes into the air which means there is no such thing as cold. Some objects such as a frying pan use conduction by transferring heat to the food to cook it.

CONVECTION Convection is one object surrounding another object that creates heat to warm the object inside it. A microwave surrounds the food as well as creating heat to warm the food.

RADIATION Radiation is heat traveling through the air to a certain object on top of it to heat it by warmth. A fire creates heat that goes through the air to the marshmallow to roast it. An object that is especially good at radiating heat is referred to as a blackbody.

CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS
A conductor is a substance that readily conducts heat. Some examples are: metal, plastic and wood. An insulator is the object that will turn another object hot or cold.
