Cancer Noadswood Science, 2016

Cancer Friday, November 03, 2017 To understand what cancer is and how medicine is beginning to tackle it

Precise Learning Students should be able to describe cancer as the result of changes in cells that lead to uncontrolled growth and division. Benign tumours are growths of abnormal cells which are contained in one area, usually within a membrane. They do not invade other parts of the body. Malignant tumour cells are cancers. They invade neighbouring tissues and spread to different parts of the body in the blood where they form secondary tumours. Scientists have identified lifestyle risk factors for various types of cancer. There are also genetic risk factors for some cancers.

Tumours Cancer is caused by uncontrolled growth and division – this uncontrolled growth and division is a result of changes that occur to the cells and results in the formation of a tumour (a growth of abnormal cells) Not all tumours are cancerous – they can be benign or malignant…

Benign Tumours Benign tumours grow until there is no more room – it stays in one place (usually within a membrane) rather than invading other tissues in the body This type isn’t normally dangerous and the tumour is not cancerous

Malignant Tumours Malignant tumours grow and spread to neighbouring healthy tissues Cells can break off and spread to other parts of the body by travelling in the bloodstream – the malignant cells then invade healthy tissues elsewhere in the body forming secondary tumours Malignant tumours are dangerous and can be fatal – they are cancerous

Lifestyle How can lifestyle impact the risks an individual faces with cancer? Smoking – the biggest preventable cause of cancer, linked to lung cancer (amongst others) Obesity – the second biggest preventable cause of cancer, linked to bowel, liver and kidney cancer UV exposure – skin cancer caused by UV radiation from the sun / frequent use of sun beds

Fight Luckily there are many organisations researching ways to prevent / cure cancers and every year the survival rates for the vast majority of cancers increases…

Practice Questions Are benign tumours cancerous?
Describe the characteristics of malignant tumours

Answers Are benign tumours cancerous – no
Describe the characteristics of malignant tumours – malignant tumours grow and spread to neighbouring healthy tissue. Cells can break off and spread to other parts of the body by travelling in the bloodstream. Malignant cells can the invade healthy tissues elsewhere in the body and form secondary tumours. Malignant tumours are dangerous and can be fatal – they are cancers
