Point out that these arrays will not be covered in detail in this course, as the course will focus on current arrays (second through fourth generations). There are no preconfigured RAID sets. VRAID and sparing span all disks within the disk group, so there are no idle “spare” drives found within the configuration. Remote support tools include Web-Based Enterprise Services (WEBES)/System Event Analyzer (SEA), Remote Support Pack (RSP), and Insight Remote Support (Insight RS). As a no-charge option, HP will install remote service tools for any EVA under warranty or service support. These tools enable self-monitoring and diagnosis. The EVA transmits status information to an HP service center for proactive problem resolution. This requires HP Hardware Support assistance. The HSV controller assigns the logical blocks of a virtual disk to specific physical disk blocks through a dynamic map managed by the controller. This is similar to page tables in a virtual memory operating system, with minimal overhead in the I/O path. Emphasize that the EVA implements virtualization at the storage system level. Other products use virtualization at different levels, for example: HP Secure Path/MPIO use virtualization at the HBA. HP Logical Volume Manager (HP-UX, Linux) offers OS-based virtualization. Veritas Volume Manager offers UNIX host-based virtualization. Managing HP Enterprise Virtual Array Solution Overview Functional layout of the EVA solution Administrator uses Command View EVA GUI (through web browser) to configure the storage required by hosts Management is done “in-band” over the storage fabric Command View EVA allows Windows server-based management (SBM) or VMware Guest OS (CV 9.2) EVA4400 array-based management (ABM) on the Management Module Creation and presentation of virtual disks The host sees the virtual disk as a physical drive XCS Instructor notes Command View EVA, as of version 3.3, was installable on the OpenView Storage Management Appliance (SMA) as well as a fabric-attached Windows Server (with specific requirements). The non-SMA version of Command View uses the term Storage Management Station (SMS) as the name for the system that replaces the SMA. The SMA is no longer a requirement for the EVA solution and is considered at end of life. The current release of Command View EVA is 9.3 and is supported on the SMS for server-based management (SBM) as well as the Management Module of the EVA4400 for array-based management (ABM). High-end models have 4 fabric ports per controller Low/mid-models have 2 fabric ports per controller Mirror ports Used for mirroring of writes from one controller to another. Two ports per controller for some models. EVA 4400 does not have mirror ports. Direct connect is supported on Windows, Linux, and HP-UX. Physically, the storage system consists of a pair of controllers and their array of physical disk drives. The physical disk drives plug into disk drive enclosures. The controller pair is cabled to the disk drive enclosures. A backplane in the disk drive enclosure distributes commands and data to the disk drives. The controller pair connects to up to four Fibre Channel fabrics, to which the hosts also connect. The Command View EVA software allows configuration and control of the storage system. It may reside on the Storage Management Appliance (SMA), a separate management server, or on the Management Module of the EVA4400. The software enables creation of virtual disks and presents them to a host, which sees the virtual disks as physical drives. The controller pair connects to the physical disk array through Fibre Channel arbitrated loops or switched loops. The EVA5000 and EVA 8000/8100 connections use four Fibre Channel loop switches, the EVA 6000/6100 uses two Fibre Channel loop switches, and the EVA3000 and EVA 4000/4100 do not use loop switches. For the EVA5000 and EVA 8000/8100, two separate loop pairs are used: loop pair 1 and loop pair 2. Each loop pair consists of two loops, each of which run independently and can take over for the other loop in case of failure. Managing HP Enterprise Virtual Array Solution Overview MPX1 GbE Controller 1 NL NL GbE Ethernet EVA N Fabric F F Instructor notes The mpx100 serves as the data transport between iSCSI hosts and the EVA storage system. The mpx100 connects to iSCSI hosts through IP connections. With an iSCSI direct connect solution, the mpx100 connects directly to the host ports on the EVA controllers. For this to work, the host port on the controllers that connect to the mpx100 must be configured for direct connect. This results in Fibre Channel arbitrated loop (FC-AL) protocol rather than point-to-point protocol. The second host port on the controller could be used to connect to the fabric for fabric-attached hosts or could be used to connect directly to the Storage Management Server for in-band system management. Support for iSCSI connection requires a minimum of XCS 5.1 or later and Command View EVA 5.x or later. Regarding the I/O module with E-PBC: E-PBC I/O module greatly enhances resolution of drive problems on the back end. Full functionality is supported only by XCS firmware. For EVA4400 model, the Environmental Monitoring Unit (EMU) functionality is built into the I/O module. CSR reduces the need for HP field engineers to do simple repairs on binary failures. Managing HP Enterprise Virtual Array Solution Overview CSR is an effort to improve product serviceability by allowing customers to perform hardware fault monitoring, diagnosis, and repair Replacement part is sent to customer instead of using HP onsite service All customer self repair (CSR) units purchased prior to February 2007 are optional (no charge for HP replacement) rather than mandatory (charge for HP travel/labor); as of February 2007, all EVAs sold have mandatory CSR HP EVA warranty includes support for CSR For EVAs with a warranty entitlement start date of 12 February 2007 or later, customers may ask HP Services to replace replaceable units (RUs) or perform a firmware upgrade of the disk drives for an additional charge Customers who purchase an HP EVA support agreement have the option to perform CSR or receive on-site support Instructor notes CSR reflects the customers’ desire for self-sufficiency. Over the last few years, research has clearly identified customer segments that want to participate in or perform a majority of the work involved in hardware fault monitoring, diagnosis, and repair. These findings were supported by a small survey of key North American EVA customers.
