7 Why play sports? Research indicates student-athletes have:
Higher G.P.A.’s Less drug/alcohol use Fewer teen pregnancies Lower drop out rate Higher graduation rate Fewer discipline referrals

8 Principles of Participation
Learn how to become a good teammate , making a positive contribution, regardless of the role on the team. Experience in problem-solving, decision- making and critical thinking. Learn to develop trust and accept the responsibility that comes with earning trust from others.

9 Participating in a Sport is a Privilege, not a Right

10 MHS Activity Code Drug and Alcohol use Behavioral
Code of Conduct is comprised of 2 aspects that student athletes must be responsible for: Drug and Alcohol use Behavioral

11 Drug/ Alcohol Code of Conduct
1st Offense Suspension for 25% of the regular seasons events and competitions scheduled for that activity. If the number of suspended dates is a fraction, that number will be rounded to the next whole number. The student is expected to attend all practices, follow all of the coach’s rules, and attend, but not dress for all of the competitions.

12 Drug / Alcohol Code of Conduct
2nd Offense: Suspension for 50% of the regular season for that current or next activity. Any fraction will be rounded up to the next whole number. 3rd Offense: Career suspension from all extracurricular programs from the date of the offense through graduation.

13 Behavioral Code of Conduct
24 hours/day 7 days/week 365 days a year All 4 years Suspension can range from one contest to an entire season. Discipline is normally progressive

14 Eligibility Grades are checked weekly.
Must pass 5 classes the previous week to be eligible the next week. At semester, you must pass 5 classes the previous semester to be eligible the next semester. Parents need to track child’s academic progress.

15 It is the responsibility of the Parents/Guardians and Student to:
NCAA Clearinghouse If you plan on playing sports in college you have to register for the NCAA Clearing house. The Clearinghouse will determine your eligibility to participate in Division 1 or Division 2 sports. The NCAA has the overall say in your status! It is the responsibility of the Parents/Guardians and Student to: Go to the internet and log on to Click on the Eligibility Center Link and follow the directions Morton High School Code, Send official transcripts to NCAA Clearinghouse second semester of your Junior year and in June after graduation of your Senior year.

16 Additional Rules Must attend all practices unless excused.
No hazing activities of any type allowed. Be on time for practices and games. Be respectful to all adults. No stealing or vandalizing. Do not attend parties where drugs/alcohol are present.

17 Care of School Equipment
It is the expectation that you return all equipment issued to you. If you lose it you must pay for it at the replacement cost. Do not have in your possession other students equipment/uniforms or that of students from other schools.

18 What do I need before I practice?
Sport Physical (School Physical for Freshman) Concussion Form Insurance Waiver Form Consent to Treat – Midwest Orthopedic Center Emergency Information for Trainer Drug Testing Consent Form (if not signed previously)

19 Absences Must attend 4 classes or more to participate that day
Practice or game Exceptions through A.D.’s office Call or your coach if you are sick or are going to miss a practice. You are expected to be present at all practices (even when injured) unless excused by your coach.

20 Off Season Opportunities
“Natural Consequences” of not participating in off-season programs. Other athletes will improve, while you stay the same or regress. Not Required Opportunity to improve Goal should be to reach your potential Not what you are, but rather what you can become

21 Communication Chain 1. Athlete to Coach 2. Parent & Athlete to Coach
3. Parent, Athlete, & Coach to Athletic Director You are expected to express concerns directly with the coach. Please don’t ask the coach or AD to keep information from son or daughter Do not try and speak to them before or after a practice or game. Please call them at school.

22 Communication Issues Appropriate For Discussion
Treatment of your child mentally and physically Ways to help your child improve Concerns about your child’s behavior Inappropriate for Discussion: Playing Time Team Strategy Play Calling Other Student-Athletes Speaking for “other” adults.

23 Parent Code of Conduct  Encourage good sportsmanship by being a positive role model. Try my best to make this a positive experience for everyone involved…my child, participants, coaches, officials, and spectators. I will insist my child treat other players, coaches, officials, and fans with respect. I will reinforce the school's drug and alcohol free policies and refrain from using alcohol and other drugs before or during contests. I will do my best to understand and appreciate the rules of the contest. I will be a "team" fan, not a "my child" fan. I will help my child learn that success is measured by the development of skills/character, not just winning or losing. If I have a concern, my player will talk to the coach at the appropriate time and place, i.e., never before, during, or immediately after a contest. I do my best to remember my ticket to a school athletic event provides me with the privilege of observing the contest, not berating officials, coaches, or players. INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR OF ANY TYPE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. ANYONE DISPLAYING THAT BEHAVIOR WILL BE ESCORTED OFF OF SCHOOL PROPERTY BY ADMINISTRATION AND/OR POLICE.

24 Join the MHS Athletic Boosters
Get Involved!!! MHS Athletic Booster Club President - Mrs. Jenny Roche Purchased over $20,000 of equipment and supplies that otherwise the taxpayers would buy or we would not have. The money is spread amongst all sports equally. Each group receives a stipend. Help by becoming a member ($15.00).

25 My Main Goal: To support our student athletes, coaches, families, and community. GO POTTERS!
