Discuss the definition of discipline and why it is necessary Discuss six key factors for progressive discipline and the steps of progressive discipline Explain items one cannot terminate based on Provide one example each of what to do and what not to do when terminating an employee Explain the major reasons why employees are terminated Mention some considerations when terminating an employee

3 Termination Defined When employment is ended between an employer and employee Can be voluntary (at-will) Can be involuntary, usually a result of employer dissatisfaction with employee (or vice versa) or an economic downturn (i.e. layoff) Can be for cause, without cause, or mutual

Ideal intention: to teach and (hopefully) correct inappropriate behavior or behavior trends Management language refers to discipline as one of three things: Fair punishment Corrective action Progressive discipline

Getting the facts straight Acting in a timely fashion Consulting in privacy Developing an appropriate action plan to correct the deficiency Discussing the consequences of continued infractions Documenting the entire transaction

12 Considerations (Not an Exhaustive List)
Legal Is the employer following his/her own policies and procedures? Is there documentation to support termination of the employee? Is it consistent? Is this a performance-related issue? Employer-employee relationship Disability (American with Disabilities Act) or lack thereof Impact of termination on the company and its reputation: Finances, employee viewpoints, public viewpoints (if warranted), long-term impact. Time of the day and time of the week
