Capital punishment or the death penalty is a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offenses.

3 Capital crimes are… The US federal government lists 41 capital offenses which are punishable by death. The capital offenses include espionage, treason, and death resulting from aircraft hijacking. However, they mostly consist of various forms of murder such as murder committed during a drug-related drive-by shooting, murder during a kidnapping, murder for hire, and genocide.

7 A little history… 156 people have been exonerated.
Capital punishment was suspended in the United States from 1972 through The court found that the death penalty was being imposed in an unconstitutional manner, on the grounds of cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution. However, in the death penalty was reinstated by the U.S. Supreme Court. Since then 1,438 people have been executed. (as of October 2016) 156 people have been exonerated.

8 The number of executions per state…Which one has the highest number?
-Note: most US death penalty stats are measured from 1976, which marks the modern death penalty era. In 1972 in Furman v. Georgia, the US Supreme Court ruled that, as practiced, the death penalty was cruel and unusual punishment, pointing to its “arbitrary and capricious” nature. In 1976, after states passed new statutes to “fix” these problems in application, the court reinstated the death penalty with the Gregg v. Georgia decision.

9 The US compared to the rest of the world…
Since 1976 (the year the U.S. reinstated the death penalty) an average of 3 countries/year have abolished the death penalty. 75 countries have abolished the death penalty altogether on grounds that it is cruel and unusual punishment. Japan is the only industrial democracy besides the United States that has the death penalty. In Japan, the executions are carried out by hanging. The majority of death sentences are imposed only in cases of multiple murders. In the USA the methods used include…
