1 Evangelii Gaudium CONTENTS Introduction: The Joy of the Gospel
Chap 1: Church’s missionary Transformation Chap 2: The Crisis of Communal Commitment Chap 3: Proclamation of the Gospel Chap 4: Social Dimension of Evangelization Chap 5: Spirit-Filled Evangelizers

2 Evangelii Gaudium 1. We Must Be a Church on a MISSION:
– We cannot stand still; we need to move forward with joy. - There is no room for complacency. We need to use language the modern person can relate to.

3 Evangelii Gaudium “I hope that all communities will devote the necessary effort to advancing along the path of a pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are. “Mere administration” can no longer be enough. Throughout the world, let us be “permanently in a state of mission.” EG 25

4 Evangelii Gaudium “The parish is not an outdated institution; … We must admit, though, that the call to review and renew our parishes has not yet sufficed to bring them nearer to people, to make them environments of living communion and participation, and to make them completely mission-oriented.” EG 28

5 Evangelii Gaudium “Pastoral ministry in a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: “We have always done it this way”. I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities …The important thing is to not walk alone, … especially under the leadership of the bishops, in a realistic pastoral discernment.” EG 33

6 Evangelii Gaudium For Our Reflection:
- “Mere administration” can no longer be enough. What would a shift from ` mere administration` to `evangelizing activity` imply for: - me personally as a priest? - for my parish pastoral planning? - for my budget allocation?

7 Evangelii Gaudium 2. We Can Overcome Challenges to Serve this Mandate
- The Church itself needs to do more to foster a sense of belonging, focusing on a pastoral approach rather than an administrative one. - To do so, pastoral ministers need to be more energetic and bold. They need to work in a more collaborative manner with the laity.

8 Evangelii Gaudium “It is striking that pastoral workers who clearly have solid doctrinal and spiritual convictions frequently fall into a lifestyle which leads to an attachment to financial security, or to a desire for power or human glory at all cost, rather than giving their lives to others in mission. Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of missionary enthusiasm!” EG 80

9 Evangelii Gaudium “The problem is not always an excess of activity, but rather activity undertaken badly, without adequate motivation, without a spirituality which would permeate it and make it pleasurable. As a result, work becomes more tiring than necessary, even leading at times to illness. Far from a content and happy tiredness, this is a tense, burdensome, dissatisfying and, in the end, unbearable fatigue.” EG 82

10 Evangelii Gaudium “And so the biggest threat of all gradually takes shape: “the gray pragmatism of the daily life of the Church, in which all appears to proceed normally, while in reality faith is wearing down and degenerating into small-mindedness”. A tomb psychology thus develops and slowly transforms Christians into mummies in a museum.” EG 83

11 Evangelii Gaudium For Our Reflection:
- Do any of the descriptions of pastoral life (robbed of missionary enthusiasm, work becomes more tiring than necessary, burdensome, dissatisfying and, in the end, unbearable fatigue, gray pragmatism, tomb psychology, mummies in a museum) at a feeling level ring true for you? Why do you feel this is so?

12 Evangelii Gaudium 3. The Good News Needs is to be Announced
- Homilies should not be moralistic, doctrinaire, or overly exegetical. Homilists need to be in touch with their people lives. - Homilies should be brief, offering the Kerygma, that Jesus Christ is with us as a sign of God’s love in the power of the Spirit! Priests must prepare the homily thoughtfully and prayerfully.

13 Evangelii Gaudium “The homily cannot be a form of entertainment yet it does need to give life and meaning to the celebration. It is a distinctive genre, since it is preaching situated within the liturgical celebration;… this context demands that preaching should guide the General Assembly, and the preacher, to a life-changing communion with Christ in the Eucharist… so that the Lord, more than his minister, will be the centre of attention.” EG 138

14 Evangelii Gaudium “The centrality of the kerygma calls for stressing elements which are most needed today: it has to express God’s saving love which precedes any moral and religious obligation on our part; it should not impose the truth but appeal to freedom; it should be marked by joy, encouragement, liveliness and a harmonious balance which will not reduce preaching to a few doctrines which are at times more philosophical than evangelical.” EG 165

15 Evangelii Gaudium For Our Reflection:
- What has been your experience of preaching? Do you enjoy it? Do you feel the joy of the Good News that you announce to others? What is the Good News for you? Do you have a favorite passage of Scripture that encapsulates the Kerygma for you?

16 Evangelii Gaudium 4. Love of God Means Love of Neighbour – The Gospel is the call to live in the reality of the Kingdom of God which is present in the here and now and is open to everyone. This calls us to work for the betterment of our world and for all those who live in it. - Above all else, we must have an overriding concern for the poor with whom we are called to live in solidarity. We can also be evangelized by them, they can teach us about God.

17 Evangelii Gaudium “This is why I want a Church which is poor and for the poor. They have much to teach us… in their difficulties they know the suffering Christ. We need to let ourselves be evangelized by them … We are called to find Christ in them, to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to speak for them and to embrace the mysterious wisdom which God wishes to share with us through them.” EG 198

18 Evangelii Gaudium “The poor person, when loved, “is esteemed as of great value”, and this is what makes the authentic option for the poor differ from any other ideology, from any attempt to exploit the poor for one’s own personal or political interest. Only this will ensure that “in every Christian community the poor feel at home. Would not this approach be the greatest and most effective presentation of the good news of the kingdom?”” EG 199

19 Evangelii Gaudium “No one must say that they cannot be close to the poor because their own lifestyle demands more attention to other areas. This is an excuse commonly heard in academic, business or professional, and even ecclesial circles… none of us are exempt from concern for the poor ... I trust in the openness and readiness of all Christians, and I ask you to seek, creative ways of accepting this renewed call.” EG 201

20 Evangelii Gaudium For Our Reflection:
From your encounters with the poor, do you believe `they have much to teach us about God`? How much contact do you have with the poor, apart from the organized acts of charity towards them? Do the poor feel welcomed in your parish?

21 Evangelii Gaudium 5. The Holy Spirit Must Fuel Our Evangelization Efforts – We must be convinced, from our own experience, that a life with Jesus is richer than a life without him. We must have prayerful encounters with our Lord lest we lose heart. - These encounters will propel us into the midst of society, responding to real needs. When we speak of these encounters, we will speak to the deepest yearnings of people’s hearts. We must become a mission!

22 Evangelii Gaudium “Spirit-filled evangelization is not the same as a set of tasks dutifully carried out despite one’s own personal inclinations and wishes. How I long to find the right words to stir up enthusiasm for a new chapter of evangelization full of fervour, joy, generosity, courage, boundless love and attraction! Yet I realize that no words of encouragement will be enough unless the fire of the Holy Spirit burns in our hearts.” EG 261

23 Evangelii Gaudium “Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch the suffering flesh of others. He hopes that we will stop looking for those personal niches which shelter us from human misfortune and instead enter into the reality of other people’s lives and know the power of tenderness. Whenever we do so, our lives become wonderfully complicated and we experience intensely what it is to be a people, to be part of a people.” EG 270

24 Evangelii Gaudium “We do not live better when we flee, hide, refuse to share, stop giving and lock ourselves up in own comforts. Such a life is nothing less than slow suicide. My mission of being in the heart of the people is not just a part of my life or a badge I can take off. Instead, it is something I cannot uproot from my being without destroying my very self. I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world.” EG 272-3

25 Evangelii Gaudium For Our Reflection:
Do you feel the `fire of the holy spirit burning in your heart` for evangelization? Do you draw your priestly identity from the community you minister in and belong to? Do we welcome the ` wonderfully complicated` lives of our people or do we look for `personal niches` to avoid suffering?

26 Thank You & God Bless!
