Talking and Listening To take an active part in discussions.
To develop an enjoyment of stories, poetry, music and drama. To listen and respond to a variety of stimuli. To develop an awareness of sounds in our language. To express themselves through PATHS and Circle Time.

Reading Pupils read a wide variety of material, both fiction and non-fiction from class and school library. They discuss and question content for greater understanding. Pupils continue to develop their sight vocabulary, their phonic skills and their use of the reading cues to further improve reading ability. They begin to use dictionaries, atlases and the internet for further information on class topics.

Writing Planning for and using a wide variety of writing frames: eg. lists, stories, poems, recipes, reports, etc. Focusing on correct use of punctuation; using capital letters, full-stops, questions marks, exclamation marks and commas. Structuring a sentence, showing good use of grammar. Learning to sequence a story with a beginning, middle and ending. Building confidence in spelling by ‘Having a go’ and developing phonics skills through Read, Write, Inc. Encourage the use of new words and the correct spelling of key words. Develop Literacy skills through ICT.

Handwriting Correct formation of lower and upper case letters.
Tall and short letter formation. Writing on the line. Spacing the writing. Organisation of the work on the page.

Mathematics Processes in Mathematics Number and Counting Data handling
Measures (time, length, weight, capacity, area, volume) Shape and space

Number and Counting Sequence and order numbers to 100 (counting forwards and backwards). Addition and subtraction to 20. Place value – tens and units (addition and subtraction using vertical method). Estimation of number. Fractions – recognition of halves and quarters (link with doubles). Number facts (learn number stories to 20). Money-recognition of coins up to £1 and beyond and finding different ways of making amounts to £1 using least amount of coins.

Data handling Pupils can collect, sort data and display results.
Sort for different criteria using Tree, Venn and Carroll diagrams. Learn to interpret different types of information displays (tables, pictographs, block graphs and line graphs). Learn to observe, discuss and reason.

Mental Maths Problem solving
Teaching pupils numeracy skills through using mental strategies to solve problems in a variety of contexts. Problem solving

Shape and Space Observe and sort shapes for different criteria.
Identify and investigate 2 Dimensional (flat) and 3 Dimensional shapes (solid). Create repeating patterns using 3 or more different 2D/3D shapes. Follow and give instructions for movement (right angle turns). Using forwards and backwards to describe movement-using terms ‘left’ and ‘right’.

Moving from arbitrary to standard measures. Introduce centimetres and metres. Use and explore litres. Measuring time (revise o’clock, half past and introduce quarter past and quarter to). Activity Based Learning in Year 3:
