1 California THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). BY THE NUMBERS California in FY 2016 1st: National ranking in NSF funds $957 Million: NSF funds awarded : NSF-funded institutions 2,532: NSF grants awarded 38: NSF research centers/facilities “California’s economic growth depends on its continued leadership in innovation, technology, …and other fields that require strong math and science training.” − Governor Jerry Brown EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN CALIFORNIA NSF-funded researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles are examining oxygen levels in the brain in order to understand when we will and when we won’t decide to take a risk The San Jose State University Foundation, funded by NSF, is conducting 5th grade classroom teaching experiments that will help inform best practices in teaching and learning basic algebra at the middle school level. A team of NSF-funded researchers led by a scientist at the University of California, San Diego is studying how infants learn essential social skills that are necessary for language and behavioral development. California Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. California received $145 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN CALIFORNIA The California Noyce Scholarship program encourages outstanding students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at California State University, Fresno to begin a career in teaching by allowing them to gain experience assisting faculty in improving science and math courses. Middle school girls selected to participate in an after-school and summer program in Scotts Valley work with adult female mentors in building interest and skills in computers and information technology (IT). The program helps mitigate the negative impacts stereotypes might have on girls' motivations to pursue careers in science and technology. The NSF-funded Revitalizing Algebra Partnership in San Francisco unites three groups— middle and high school algebra teachers, undergraduate mathematics majors, and graduate mathematics students who teach college algebra—with the primary goal of facilitating career advancement. Courtesy: “…Our research mission has never been more important to the future of our world and the people who inhabit it.” − John Hennessy, Former President, Stanford University “Advancing STEM education in California and creating more opportunities for today`s students is key to maintaining competitiveness in the global economy.” − John Lock, former CEO of Project Lead the Way Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
