xylem guard cells phloem stomata
BELL WORK: Which of the following is the “odd one out”? EXPLAIN your answer. xylem guard cells phloem stomata
2
First, let’s set up your foldable for today.
1. Fold your blank paper in half hamburger-style. Unfold the paper and draw a line along your fold line. 2. Fold your paper in half hot dog- style. Unfold the paper. Fold the two long edges in to meet in the middle.
3
3. CAREFULLY cut the middle of the long doors.
4. Write “Photosynthesis” on the left doors of your foldable. 5. Write “Cellular Respiration” on the right doors of your foldable. (light) (room) (together) (put) (again) (breathe)
4
INSIDE BACK Photosynthesis Equation Label Products and Reactants
Cellular Respiration Equation Label Products and reactants Photosynthesis Definition Where it occurs in cell Cell Respiration Definition Draw a chloroplast with arrows showing what enters and leaves during photosynthesis Draw a mitochondria with arrows showing what enters and leaves during cellular respiration 2 sentence summary. Use the words: energy, reactant, autotroph 2 sentence summary. Use the words: ATP, mitochondria, plant, animal BACK Draw a picture showing photosynthesis & cellular respiration as a cycle Venn Diagram Leave this half blank!
5
Today… Have the teacher check your work when it’s complete
Glue this onto a new journal page Watch the photosynthesis video and answer the questions under your foldable If you get done early, then finish your 1 page from yesterday.
6
How is energy transformed in living things?
7
ENERGY: the ability to do work
8
Most energy originally comes from the sun in the form of light.
9
Unused energy leaves the Earth in the form of heat.
10
How do plants turn sunlight into food?
11
(on your foldable) PHOTOSYNTHESIS: the process in which light energy is converted to chemical energy (food) *occurs in chloroplasts of cells
12
To perform photosynthesis, plants need three REACTANTS: 1
To perform photosynthesis, plants need three REACTANTS: 1. sunlight (energy) 2. water 3. carbon dioxide After photosynthesis, plants make two PRODUCTS: 1. glucose (used as food) 2. oxygen (released through stomata)
13
Photosynthesis is a CHEMICAL REACTION, which means that it has a CHEMICAL EQUATION. The equation for photosynthesis is: energy + 6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H O2 Copy the equation onto your foldable – be sure to label the REACTANTS and PRODUCTS!
14
Remember that photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts…draw this diagram on your foldable!
sunlight glucose carbon dioxide oxygen water
15
In one or two sentences, summarize the process of photosynthesis.
16
How do plant and animal cells get their energy?
17
Cells get their energy by breaking down glucose molecules.
This happens in PLANT AND ANIMAL cells! Animals can’t produce their own glucose…so where does it come from?
18
CELLULAR RESPIRATION: the process in which glucose (food) is broken down and converted to energy for cell functions (ATP) *occurs in mitochondria of cells (on your foldable)
19
Cell also release HEAT in the process of cellular respiration!
To perform cellular respiration, cells need two REACTANTS: 1. oxygen 2. glucose (food) After cellular respiration, cells make three PRODUCTS: 1. carbon dioxide 2. water 3. energy (36 ATP molecules) Cell also release HEAT in the process of cellular respiration!
20
Cellular respiration is a CHEMICAL REACTION, which means that it has a CHEMICAL EQUATION. The equation for cellular respiration is: 6 O2 + C6H12O6 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy Copy the equation onto your foldable – be sure to label the REACTANTS and PRODUCTS!
21
Remember that cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria…draw this diagram on your foldable!
(HEAT) oxygen ATP water glucose carbon dioxide
22
Remember! ATP: an energy molecule (Adenosine triphosphate) used for cellular processes stored in the bonds between elements more bonds = more energy (more ATP)
23
In one or two sentences, summarize the process of cellular respiration.
24
Close your foldable and fold it in half
Close your foldable and fold it in half. Glue one side to your journal page.
25
On the exposed side, draw a picture to illustrate the cycle of photosynthesis & cellular respiration.
26
Debrief: Explain the relationship between cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Consider the reactants and products of each process.
