Cutting Edge understanding of lyme or multiple system infectious disease syndrome (MSIDS)
2
Alan MacDonald MD, Fellow, College of American Pathologists
3
Overview Background On Facts and Safety (what the newspapers often leave out) Testing Differences (of which many MDs are unaware) Cutting-Edge Understanding of Lyme, Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome (MSIDS) and Tick Borne Disease How My Family Was Cured: Scientific Frontiers
5
FACT: MSIDS, a better name than “lyme”
Dr. Richard Horowitz (ILADS Lyme Literate MD and author of Why Can’t I Get Better? Solving the Mystery of Lyme and Chronic Disease) coined the term MSIDS, Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome.
6
MSIDS Better describes ingrained “lyme” or multiple tick infections and includes illnesses like fibromyalgia, MS, ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and chronic fatigue, where evidence of chronic infection involvement is mounting. Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, states in The Under Our Skin Documentary that in 5 years, he had not had a single patient with ALS, MS or Parkinson’s who did not test positive for borrelia.
7
Facts CDC: Lyme is the fastest growing vector-borne, infectious disease in the US CDC: Lyme disease infects 300,000 people a year in the US. ILADS: Fewer than 50% of lyme patients recall a tick bite. ILADS: Fewer than 50% of lyme patients recall any rash or bull’s eye. ILADS: The Elisa screening test misses 35% of culture-proven lyme disease: There are false-negative tests. ILADS: Short treatment courses of antibiotics have resulted in upwards of a 40% relapse rate.
9
Food for Thought True: Lyme and other tick-borne diseases are in Monroe County. False: “ Ticks must stay attached to your body for between hours to transmit Lyme, so promptly removing them with tweezers will likely prevent contracting Lyme disease.” ( There is significant evidence and many documented case reports that Borrelia infection can occur in humans within 4-6 hours after tick attachment.
10
Consider… Borrelia is in tick salivary glands and does not require hours to move from the tick gut into the person, as previously was believed. Powassan virus can be transmitted in just 15 minutes. 16 cases in NYS up to Fatality from Powassan is 10-60%. I collected 278 ticks in Monroe County, many in December at degrees out! If a dog has lyme, the owner can have lyme, period. Dogs are getting better screening for lyme than people.
12
IF BITTEN… Do not SQUEEZE the tick!
Needle-tip tweezers, gentle traction behind tick’s head, try not to break off tick body from head. Tick forceps from remove-tick.com
14
Worth Noting: Many “unscrew” tick tools do not work on tiny nymphs.
A small injection of epinephrine under the attachment site will make ticks back out. Tying a loop of fine thread, like a gentle lasso around the neck, with gentle traction, can sometimes get a tick to back out on its own.
16
Remember! SAVE THE TICK for testing! Send it YOURSELF with order form from Igenex website. It’s easier to look for pathogens in a tiny tick than it is in a big human! Wash your hands! Borrelia has been documented to be transferred by squished “tick juice” getting in someone’s eye. Borrelia is also found in sperm, is a spirochete bacteria like syphilis, and is suspected of being sexually transmitted.
17
BE SMART
19
Bite Prevention: Do not brush by tall grass and bushes. Wide paths with no low trees; avoid leaf litter. Ticks sense carbon dioxide. Hair up, large brimmed hat, light-color clothes tucked in, bare legs (depending on skin color). Frequent tick checks. Ticks will crawl all over a deet-soaked sneaker, but die on contact with permethrin.
20
Strip Naked Remove clothes outside after outside time.
Clothes in bag to the dryer. Naked tick check especially genitals, underarms, in ears, behind ears, scalp. Get help for head and ear check! (eyelashes)
21
What Many MDs Need to Learn:
It is negligent to not test for Babesia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Bartonella, Rickettsia and possibly other tick infections, when testing for “Lyme”. Most non-lyme literate doctors and people view “lyme disease” as an infection with one bacteria: The borrelia burdorferi spirochete bacteria. This could not be more of a mistake.
22
Every tick is a cesspool
of many pathogens and parasites, all of which can be transmitted in one tick bite.
23
Dr. Stephen E. Fry, MD Fry Laboratories, LLC.
“…sequencing DNA isolated directly from patient samples and running it through our analysis software. RIDI™ analyzes each individual sequence read by comparing it to the National Center for Bioinformatics’ (NCBI) databases of all known organisms and finds the best match.”
24
Controversy IDSA (Infectious Disease Society of America)
ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Disease Society) IDSA (Infectious Disease Society of America)
25
Testing Misinformation
A negative test result never means you do not have lyme or tick borne disease. Babesia, bartonella, ehrlichia, anaplasma, rickettsia, mycoplasma tick infections require separate tests. Local testing only based on 1 strain of borrelia from Europe, versus Igenex labs, which uses 3 strains for testing, including 2 from the US.
26
Cutting Edge Understanding…
27
2016: Dr. Alan MacDonald proves parasitic nematode worms harbor Lyme bacteria inside of them in human brains Borrelia-infected nemotodes identified via FISH (Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization and molecular beacon DNA probes) with a 100% DNA match. 10/10 MS samples had borrelia-infected nematodes in them. GBM brain tumor 5 specimens had infected worms. 4 Lewy Body Dementia specimens had infected worms. New “lyme” vaccine only targets OSP-A proteins found on borrelia bacteria
28
1984: Dr. William Burgdorfer, Ph.D. wrote about nemotodes in tick guts : Dr. Eva Sapi, Ph.D. found 30% of adult ticks contained nemotodes.
29
People are simply more like dogs and cats than we like to admit
Ticks are proven to carry parasitic worms in their guts and inject them into animals (humans) when the tick feeds. Biting midges are the vectors of filarial worms. Mosquitoes also transmit babesia (protozoa parasite). Demodex skin mite colonization in people is 20–80 %, reaching 100 % in the elderly. Parasitic worm eggs are in soil and get in our produce & meat.
31
MSIDS, Additive, Co-Morbidities
32
Borrelia Holds the Door Open
Vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression is reduced by 50 times in monocytes by borrelia burgdorferi Optimum VDR function is essential for a healthy immune system. Co-infections from the tick bite, opportunistic infections, parasite load increase with the hard-hit immune system and decreased VDR
33
Why is “lyme” so bad today?
5,300-year-old ice mummy had borrelia burgdoferi in him. Climate. Some folks will tell you about bio-warfare experiments on Plum Island in the 1950’s, off the coast of Lyme, Connecticut. I have some additional food for thought to answer this question, keep FOOD in mind.
34
OUR MICROBIOME “Within the human body, it is estimated that there are 10x as many microbial cells as human cells.” (NIH Human Microbiome Project) Consider the idea that parasites have their own microbiome too. What if Dr. MacDonald looked for more than borrelia DNA inside the nematodes?
35
Zip-Lock Bags
36
Zip-lock Bags The key to getting rid of “lyme disease” (MSIDS) is getting rid of parasites! (and getting rid of biofilm—another important detail).
37
Pathogens inside Parasites: Entomopathogenic Nematodes
2002: Wolbachia bacteria inside nematodes in people as cause for river blindness. 2006: Photorhabdus bacteria, an emerging pathogen in the US, transferred to 49-year old man by an insect-pathogenic nematode, heterorhabditis. 2012: Bacillus Oleronius bacteria, linked with Rosacea, isolated from Demodex mites. 2014: Mycobacterium Ulcerans associated with M. Perstans nematodes in people.
38
Keeping Food and Food Worms in Mind
39
Our GMO food: Soy and Beet Nematodes
Soy and sugar beet nematodes devastate crops. We eat these nematodes. Sugar bowl article scrubbed from internet about eggs surviving processing. 2015 discovery: Beet nematode, Heterodera Schactii, reprograms the root by producing cytokinin, a plant hormone. 2003: In BBA Molecuar Cell Research journal, cytokinin induces differentiation of HL-60 human cells, which are used for cancer research. Cytokinin can manipulate human cells.
40
Consider soy and beet worms in all our non-organic, processed food
2014: These worms are resistant to GMO/BT crops’ ability to produce their own pesticide (Bt crops have no negative effects on entomopathogenic nematode, Phys.org news). 2011: In Heterodera glycines, the soybean cyst nematode 4 different RNA viruses were identified. “All four viruses… were distantly related to nya- and bornaviruses, rhabdoviruses, bunyaviruses, and tenuiviruses. Some members of these families… can cause significant diseases in animals and plants.” (Bekal, 2011) Soybean worm cysts survive in a bird’s digestive system.
41
Leaky Gut—an easy in for Nematodes?
Junctions of cells in GI tract are “leaky” Borrelia burdorferi bacteria and many pathogens damage the gut. Many medications and antibiotics cause leaky gut. “Glyphosate has been shown to severely damage your gut flora and cause chronic diseases rooted in gut dysfunction” Dr. Mercola Grab a soy and sugar breakfast bar with glyphosate in the wheat… Glyphosate in 2015 was in 93% of urine of Americans
42
Cutting Edge Theory and Understanding
In the most progressive understanding of MSIDS or lyme disease or in any chronic illness, parasites have a most important role.
43
BIOFILM What is it? Tooth tartar
A place to hide and “swap spit” by horizontal transfer of genetic material. 2016: Dr. Eva Sapi proved the presence of Borrelia biofilm in human infected skin tissues.
44
Good News!!! After 4 years of attending ILADS conferences, continuously taking antibiotics (including central line IVs), many expensive supplements, lyme- literate doctors, homeopathy, herbs, infared sauna fever therapy…
45
Scientific Frontiers EM (Eminus) energy work developed by Ethan Borg MSOM LAc, cleared our bodies of lyme disease in 4 months. EM is no-touch energy work based on Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Qigong theory of qi and energy movement. Now I specialize in this work and Ethan asked me to write the training manual for teaching it to other EM practitioners. Lyme Light
