3 Math Units Unit 1: Creating Routines and Using Data
Unit 2: Developing Base Ten Number Sense Unit 3: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Unit 4: Sorting, Comparing, and Ordering Unit 5: Understanding Place Value Unit 6: Understanding Shapes and Fractions ** At the beginning of each unit, you will receive a parent letter explaining in detail the specific standards that will be taught during each unit **

4 Daily Math Practices Number Talks – help students become proficient in math The goals are: 1. Developing number sense 2. Developing fluency with small numbers 3. Making Tens Number talks are a great way for students to use mental math to solve problems, explain their thinking, and have mathematical debates. A Number Talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful ongoing practice with computation. Math Centers- provide an opportunity for small group instruction and differentiation Journaling

5 Standards of Mathematical Practices
Students are expected to: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

6 English Language Arts In English Language Arts, there are three major comprehension objectives: Reading Foundational (print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics & word recognition, fluency) Conventions of Standard English (grammar skills: nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentence structure, etc. Vocabulary Acquisition and Use (multiple meaning words, using context clues, shades of meaning, prefixes/suffixes, etc.

7 Grade Level Reading Expectations
Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May D/E E F/G G H I J This is a table for monitoring progress of Instructional Reading Level and growth. Instructional level means it can be read with instructional support. Henry County Schools are using Fountas & Pinnell to monitor and track your child’s reading growth. This table only shows First grade levels. Students will be assessed a minimum of 3 times a year. Extra support in weak areas will be given if he/she is below grade level expectations as well as progress monitoring assessments. How can you help at home? Have your child to read daily for 15 minutes As your child is reading, ask them various questions to monitor comprehension and have them to retell/summarize what they’ve read Practice reading the weekly sight words Model fluency sounds like

8 Writing Writing is a focus area and will be integrated into all content areas !!!
There are 3 writing genres the students will focus on during the writing block: Narrative Opinion Informative/Explanatory

9 Science Units Weather and Seasons Plants and Animals Water Sound
Light and Shadows Magnets

10 Social Studies Units Historical Understandings (Read about and describe the life of historical figures and American Folktales) Geographic Understandings (Map Skills: identifying your city, state, county, continents, oceans, landforms) Government/Civics (Positive Character Traits and Patriotic Words) Economics (Goods/Services, Making Choices, Producers/Consumers)

11 Grading Scale Level 1 (Emerging): Limited or minimum progress toward achievement of the standard Level 2 (Progressing): Progressing toward achievement of the standard Level 3 (Meets): Consistently and independently achieves the standard Level 4 (Exceeds): Consistently and independently achieves the standard with evidence of exceeding the standard

12 Homework Monday-Thursday students will receive daily math and reading homework Each Wednesday they will receive a writing prompt Homework is NOT counted as a grade Used to reinforce and review the standards that we are working on in class Due Friday of each week

13 Please send a healthy daily snack to school with your child.
On P.E. days, the students are asked to wear sneakers ALL transportation changes MUST BE HANDWRITTEN Please check your child’s Take Home Folder and initial the agendas daily
