Windows 10 will continue to have basic V4 print drivers In Operating System (In OS) for newer LaserJet products. This follows the Win8/8.1 strategy
Windows 10 will have a mix of V3 drivers (for older products) and V4 drivers for newer products available via Windows Update.
WS Discovery will pull down a Windows Update driver (if available) or default to a class In OS driver. WS discovery will also use a UPD driver if installed on the system if it is the highest ranking match.

WSD devices when discovered on a network will use the Microsoft WSD port monitor. This will result in a print driver using a “WSD Port” for newer printers and a TCP/IP port for older printers.
For Phoenix based MFPs (shown to the right) when discovered via Microsoft Discovery will also add WS scan features in the driver properties and Control Panel of the MFP printer (on LCD control panel models).
Microsoft Discovery adds feature sets that are detected via product firmware that do not occur over a TCP/IP port. For example- Scanning for some Pro MFP products.

Most of our currently shipping products and all of our new products support “Web Services for Devices” or WSD in device firmware. This allows devices to be “Web Services Discoverable” on a network when connected. Products that include WSD in firmware are: Most LaserJet Printers introduced 2010 and newer are Web Services Print enabled.

USB Plug and Play is basically unchanged in Windows 10.
Driver selection for USB Plug and Play will depend on:
Internet connectivity- (link to get to Windows Update)
Windows Update is enabled on the PC
IN OS Basic V4 driver will install for newer products.
Legacy LaserJets may need an active link to Windows Update, or go to hp.com for a driver solution (Product Specific (discrete) or UPD may be supported).
The Dot 4 download file for Windows 10 is the same as Windows 8.1.

UPD 6.1 will be supported in Windows 10. UPD PCL 6 and PS are supported in Windows 10. Older version of UPD are not supported but are being tested to see what occurs. Testing results are not available at this time. Currently scheduled for customer release in September 2015.

The WSD Port Monitor is a Microsoft printer port monitor that was originally released in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.  This port monitor supports printing to network devices that are designed to include Web Services for Devices (WSD) technology.  Web Services for Devices allows network- connected IP-based devices to advertise their functionality and offer these services to clients by using the Web Services protocol.  WSD-based devices and clients communicate over the network using a series of SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) messages over UDP (User Datagram Protocol) and HTTP(S).  WSD for Devices provides a network plug-and-play experience that is similar to installing a USB device.  Web Services for Devices also defines a security profile that may be extended to provide additional protection and authentication using device-based certificates.

The WSD Port Monitor is installed by default on Windows Vista, Win 7, and Win 8/8.1/10.  Web Services for Devices is not available for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.  These clients can print to WSD-based devices that are shared on computers running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.  There are four main tasks performed by the WSD Port Monitor:

When “network discovery” is enabled on the Win 10 system - WSD supported network printers can be detected and installed automatically. On larger networks WSD compliant printers can be discovered by selecting “add a device / printer”.

Loss of functionality after a Windows 8/8.1/10 auto-install, for example, duplex, certain paper trays, status, job storage, scan, or fax.
The in-Win8/8.1/10 OS V4 print driver is installed; or for some products, the I/O communication component (DOT4) must be updated.
For a different print driver or to add the I/O (DOT4) component:
Download the DOT4 and print driver package from hp.com or Windows Update.
Preload the DOT4 package.
Run the solution installer, use the Add Printer or Add Device Wizard, or the in-Win8/8.1/10 network auto install will install.
To stay on the V4 driver with no I/O, you can add duplex or paper tray support:
Duplex – Manually configure the duplexer by going to Devices and Printers.
Paper trays – Manually configure the tray in the driver. For tray 5 or 6, set the tray size or tray on the device, and enable the Auto-Select setting.
Cannot print or scan after installing the product on a network using the Add Printer Wizard. There is no error message; or there is no print queue even though the device appears in Devices and Printers.
The Add Printer Wizard defaults to a Web Services port, not a TCP/IP port.
Go to hp.com for the product’s full solution (uses the TCP/IP port). - OR – Uninstall or remove the original device (Control Panel > Devices and Printers).
Use the Add Printer Wizard, and select the TCP/IP port option.
TIP: Try reinstalling before performing an uninstall.

There are no print drivers for the HP LaserJet 1010, and1012 products; or the print drivers will not install.

Preload the product print driver in the Windows 8/8.1/10 driver store. A network auto install occurs.
Use the Add Printer or Add Device Wizard, or connect the USB cable for a Plug-N-Play event to install.
The customer cannot determine what a Windows 8/8.1/10 UI tile is.
Rename the tile.
The customer does not want a Windows 8/8.1/10 UI tile on the desktop.
Uninstall the Windows 8 UI tile.
If you are unable to resolve an issue for a customer, gather the install logs and attach them to the case.

1. Check printer control panel, step into “Service” menu, and then step into “Smart Install”, turn off Smart Install
2. Visit HP.com product support page to download a small SW utility, running that utility to disable Smart Install
