About Me I live in Victor with my family and cat.
We have two children: Ethan 14, Mia 11 I love to cheer for my children at sporting events, ride my bike, garden, and read. Undergrad: Houghton College Graduate School: Buffalo State Multiple years of teaching experience: 4th year in Pittsford.

reading Start the year with reviewing and strengthening foundational skills. As year progresses delve deeper into comprehension strategies. Long stretches of time to read books at “Just Right” reading level Opportunities to talk and write in response to their reading Reading class time is a mixture of individual conferences with the teacher, small group discussion time, whole group shared reading and discussion experience, independent reading and response time Book talks StoryWorks

Reading units Each unit is introduced with whole group picture book read aloud with mini-lessons and discussion experiences. Then students independently read a book from the unit and respond via written response and small group discussion. Writing Writing throughout the curriculum Units of study include:
Expository Persuasive Narrative Poetry Write on paper and on laptops

Word Study Goal: to know how to spell each spelling pattern even in words not on the list Ability groupings based on beginning of the year and mid-year assessment Word lists based on spelling patterns In class practice focuses on both spelling and the meaning of the words Test includes some words from the list and some unassigned words Support at home: sort the words on the list look for other words that follow the spelling pattern

Used to keep track of assignments, tests, special dates, etc. Information is copied from the board in classroom Parents asked to check it frequently

Homework Strategies Identify a location for doing homework that is free of distractions Have all materials available and organized Allocate enough time to complete activities and keep on schedule Develop a sequential plan for completing multi-task assignments

Birthdays School policy: no treats because of health concerns
Sing “Happy Birthday” Birthday child chooses a game the whole class can play together Birthday child receives a pencil and sticker badge Some parents like to donate a book or game to the classroom for the whole class to use. Though welcome, this is not an expectation.

Nominations and Friday Free Time
When whole class earns 10 compliments from me or other teachers they earn Friday Free time. Students nominate peers who exemplify the class created rules and school character traits
