Creating space for youth-led initiatives with presentations from Norfolk’s Teens With A Purpose and Salina’s Ciclovia Salinas

2 2018 All-America city award promoting equity through inclusive civic engagement
2018 is the 50th anniversary of the Report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorder. The report concluded with words that fit easily within our own times, “it is time to make good the promises of American democracy to all citizens – urban and rural, white, black, Spanish surname, American Indians, and every minority group.”

Young People listen to one another so why not arm them with accurate information to share with one another

4 About Us Teens With a Purpose TWP is committed to building young leaders who positively impact their neighbors, classmates, schools, governments, congregations and one another. Young people shaping and creating an inspired and positive world where dreams become reality and the impossible is made possible for everyone. We began as a AIDS Ministry in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, in Norfolk VA MISSION: To create a platform that empowers young people to use their voice, creativity, reflection and action to affect personal growth, transform lives and impact communities.

8 Arts Education & Enrichment
This area of development enables youth, through creative expression, to hone their ability to communicate, acquire cultural literacy, gain industry knowledge, and most importantly, develop their voice as community leaders. TWP gives youth the opportunity to articulate their experiences and express their creativity through fine arts instruction, multimedia production, and performing arts. Includes the literacy programs Hear This school-based Literacy Program, Hampton Roads Youth Poets (HRYP), Youth Poet Laureate and the music program Music Made Simple.

9 HealthE = Healthy living + Exercise & Teen camps
Camps, activities, workshops and opportunities to discuss issues relevant to youth while increasing self-esteem and promoting behaviors, maintaining optimal physical and emotional well-being and personal safety. Includes the Garden of Amity, Spring Break Camp & Camp Inspired.

10 Community Outreach This area of social responsibility and development provides youth with opportunities to engage with local and national communities to provide community service and model pro-social behavior, proactively contributing to the world.

11 ANNUAL TEEN EVENT Youth create an annual teen event that is the climax for their education and entertainment outreach efforts for the year. It’s always fun and out of the box.
