1 Crimestoppers Gloucestershire Ambassadors Scheme

2 Crimestoppers Facts Crimestoppers is an independent charity - only charity in UK helping to solve crimes and find criminals Not part of the Police or a Government department Not linked to Crimewatch It takes information anonymously – NOT confidential For people who don't want to go to Police to give information about crime – not a replacement but a safe alternative Set up by Lord Ashcroft 28 years ago o what is Crimestoppers? Crimestoppers is the only formal recognised system that gives potential sources the facility to pass information to the police without having to disclose their identity. The caller will speak with experienced personnel and will be asked questions relating to the information they wish to give but no attempt will be made to seek their identity. No details relating to gender, age or ethnic origin will be noted or recorded. ANONYMITY is at the core of Crimestoppers – callers will not have to visit a police station or appear in court. With the agreement of ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers), Crimestoppers is the only crime line that the police service must use to promote and encourage anonymous information. Local crime lines must not be set up for this purpose. HISTORY – How it started

3 TWO ways to give information
Crimestoppers TWO ways to give information Mobile versions launched this year Two way reporting form And chat rooms to be piloted soon

4 Who is it aimed at ...not prepared to ‘get involved’
Crimestoppers Who is it aimed at ...not prepared to ‘get involved’ …frightened because they fear retribution (from the subject) …compromised by their family (giving information about a relative or close friend etc.) …compromised because they are criminals themselves …compromised by their employment Why do people not want to get involved?

5 Would you call Crimestoppers?
call the police? Yes 17% No 83% Would you call Crimestoppers? Why is there a need for Crimestoppers to act as a conduit for information to be passed between the public & the police? Look at the results of a survey conducted in Stockport, Manchester and reported in Police Review 23rd April 1999. In the same survey, members of the public were asked whether they would phone an organisation like Crimestoppers if they had the same information. The ‘Yes/No’ position has completely reversed i.e. the public want to help fight crime but they don’t want to become involved. Members of the public were asked whether they would phone the police (directly) if they had information about crime or criminal activity. ADD Points from next slide 24% Yes No 76%

6 Why does it work? No personal details are taken Calls are not recorded
Crimestoppers Why does it work? No personal details are taken Calls are not recorded Calls and online forms cannot be traced Users are not required to make a statement to the police Users are not required to appear in court Since some callers might face a charge if they phone Crimestoppers on a mobile, we do not say that calls are free. All information reports are sanitised Any references which may identify the caller will be removed from the information e.g. gender, age, ethnicity etc. Information is input onto a database It is then forwarded to Force/Divisional Intelligence Units or appropriate law enforcement agencies (Customs, Immigration etc) for research & tasking to officers

7 Crimestoppers Crimestoppers WORKS!! We are proud to state that over 28 years we have never broken our promise of anonymity. As a result of information given to Crimestoppers… 7 people are arrested EVERY DAY and charged with a variety of offences EVERY 10 DAYS somebody is arrested & charged with murder 44 positive actions are made by law enforcement EVERY DAY as a result of information given to Crimestoppers
