The tests have questions of 1 and 2 marks and children are given marks for working out if they finish the task, but get the answer incorrect.

8. READING 2017
PAPER 1
There is only one paper based on reading comprehension of three to four different, un-linked texts, with a total of 35 to 40 questions. (Totalling 50 marks)
The least demanding texts will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty. Questions worth 1,2,or 3 marks each.
Lasts for 1 hour (no ‘reading time’ to start)

9. READING SKILLS ASSESSED
The most crucial aspects of reading at the end of Key Stage 2 are:-
Accuracy (decoding familiar and unfamiliar words correctly)
Fluency (speed and confidence)
Comprehension (drawing meaning from text)
2a Explain the meanings of words in context.
2b Retrieve and record information/ identify key details
2c Summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph.
2d Make inferences from the text using evidence to justify and explain.
2e Predict what might happen from details stated and implied.
2f Identify /explain how information/ narrative content is related and contributes to the meaning as a whole.
2g Identify how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases.

10. Reading Test Examples
Some questions will ask the children to find answers directly from the reading booklets they are given.

11. Others will require the children to deduce answers by using words or phrases as evidence.

12. Some questions will ask the children to evaluate what they have read, again using the text to back up their answers.

Comprises 40 to 50 short-answer questions covering grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.

Grammar
 Pupils should have a broad vocabulary, understand how to use word types and the grammatical functions of words, including: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and articles.
 The features of different types of sentence, including statements, questions and commands, and how to use them.
 The grammar of complex sentences, including clauses, phrases and connectives.
 The purpose of paragraphs, and how ideas can be linked.
 How to proof read to check for spelling and punctuation errors, omissions and repetitions.

16. WRITING 2017
This year a greater focus on the progress children make throughout the school year, as opposed to a test-day snapshot of what they know.
teachers will assess children’s writing composition. Children’s results for English writing will be a judgement of their work across Year 6.
children's grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will be assessed as part of their writing, but their creativity and writing style will also be evaluated.
Schools will moderate their judgements with other local schools and may be moderated by their Local Authorities too.

18. Writing Criteria Y6 expected
The pupil can write for a range of purposes and audiences (including writing a short story):
creating atmosphere, and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action
selecting vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect the level of formality required mostly correctly
using a range of cohesive devices, including adverbials, within and across sentences and paragraphs
using passive and modal verbs mostly appropriately
using a wide range of clause structures, sometimes varying their position within the sentence
using adverbs, preposition phrases and expanded noun phrases e ectively to add detail, quali cation and precision

20. SAT SCALES The expected standard in each subject is 100.
Your child will receive a raw score and a standardized score.
The DFE will wait until pupils have taken the tests and marked before the national standard can be set (July 2017)
Lowest score is 80 and the highest is 120.

21. In 2016 to get an expected level (100) in the maths test the children had to get 60 out of 110.
In 2016 to get an expected level (100) in the reading test the children had to get 21 out of 50.
In 2016 to get an expected level (100) in GPS the children had to get 43 out of 70.
These thresholds change each year.

All KS2 SATs will be held in the week beginning 8th May 2017

23. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Some support can be given to children who have a ‘statement of educational needs’. Requests for additional time will be made by teachers using their knowledge of children and the children’s individual needs.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, no help can be given with the English tests
A teacher can help a child to read instructions on the maths test.
Children with visual impairment can have an enlarged copy of the test.
Children who do not have English as a first language can have a translator for maths.

24. REPORTING RESULTS
Children’s progress, as well as their achievement, will be measured and reported on in school performance tables.
Teacher assessments will be passed on to secondary schools so they can be used in planning for year 7 teaching.
The results are returned via mid July.
Written reports are given at the end of the summer term along with your child’s results and the results for school.

25. HELPING AT HOME Revision Books; CGP, Letts, Rising Stars etc.
Try not to put too much pressure on your child.
Support with homework and targets that have been discussed at Parents Evening.
Read regularly and discuss a variety of texts – not just ‘listening’ to your child read.
Short bursts of maths, times tables and problem solving etc.
