1 PAUSE AND THINK: Chapter 1-8
What are some possible themes of Ender’s Game we have already encountered? (RL.7.2) How have the different settings (school/home/Battle School) and various armies (Launch, Salamander, and Rat) changed the story elements (characters, conflicts, themes)? (RL.7.3) (Pod activity today. Be prepared to describe events from the text to support your answer to your pod members.)

2 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES
ENDER’S GAME Chapter 1-8 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES What are some possible themes of Ender’s Game we have already encountered? (RL.7.2) 1st: Don’t judge a book by its cover: Stilson (an older, larger boy) tries to fight Ender and Ender wins. Brains over Brawn: In the battlegames, Ender teaches himself to control null-g. Trust your instincts: In the 4th Sal. Battle Ender disobeyed Bonzo, knowing he could keep them from defeat. 2nd: Don’t judge a book by its cover: Bonzo does not think Ender is worth training as a soldier, but in actuality Ender is one of the best soldiers in Battle School. Ender is thought not to be worth anything because he is a Launchy, but he gets promoted to an army, trains launch soldiers, takes out nearly all of Leopard’s remaining soldiers in the battle. Ender is a 6yo super genius. Children vs. Adults: Children are trying to get better and be promoted and have to prove their progress to the instructors. IF manipulating Ender (being controlled by authority). Good vs. Evil: The IF can be seen as evil for manipulating Ender’s life, putting Ender as the “good” in the scenario. Ender vs. Bullies shows us good qualities of Ender vs. evil (cruel intentions) of others. 5th: Bravery is the key to success: Ender acted bravely against Stilson and gang, succeeding in defeating the bullies. Overcoming obstacles through intelligence rather than violence: Fight with Stilson, when Bernard was hitting him on the head, soldiers conflict with the desks. Good vs. Evil: Ender is set against bullies. Don’t judge a book by its cover: Bonzo judged Ender to be a poor soldier before he had the chance to prove himself. 7th: Don’t judge a book by its cover: Ender is young and small, but he is able to beat up older boys and outsmart them (better at physical and mental combat). Graff is their instructor and has to maintain that authority figure, but he is also kind and cares about the boys. No one would give Ender the chance to prove himself as a soldier, but he shows us he is more skilled than many of the other soldiers. Bonzo has an army that is high in the rankings, leading us to believe he is a good commander; however, the way he treats Ender, we see he has a lot of things backwards and is not such a good commander after all. Peter acts like he is tough and cruel, but when he was not being watched, he was able to show compassion to Ender.

3 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES
ENDER’S GAME Chapter 1-8 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES Games In the book, many important concepts are interpreted through games. We know Anderson uses the mind game as a psychological tool to understand Ender. We also know the mind game modifies itself as it interacts with a person, showing the technology is self-reprogramming. The encounter in the gameroom with the older boys over the holo-games allowed Ender to find a new confidence about being at Battle School. Finally, the Army vs. Army battles at Battle School are a type of game similar to modern day football that allows the soldiers to assess their own abilities as soldiers, as well as those of their fellow soldiers. They can further use this information to assess themselves, and the instructors use the information to assess the soldiers.

4 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES
ENDER’S GAME Chapter 1-8 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES Good vs. Evil The battle of good versus evil can be seen all throughout the story. In the first eight chapters, Ender battles with his compassionate nature (the good within) against his fight for survival (the evil he causes). We also see good versus evil in the characters of Valentine and Peter. Valentine seems to be all that is good while Peter’s violent nature portrays him as evil. As well, Ender is seen as good against both bullies Stilson and Bonzo. Finally, the manipulation the IF conducts over Ender’s life could cause us to view them as evil and Ender as good.

5 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES
ENDER’S GAME Chapter 1-8 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES Warfare/Competition The Battle School exists because of the war between humans and the buggers, as much as the competition between the soldiers for command positions in the fleet.. Ender is constantly in conflict with other children (Stilson, Bonzo, Bernard). Ender battles the older boys in the gameroom. The battleroom is structured around warfare, victory, and defeating the enemy. Throughout the book, Ender’s tactics in combat and how he resolves conflicts cause us to ask ourselves what are acceptable actions during conflict.

6 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES Don’t judge a book by its cover!
ENDER’S GAME Chapter 1-8 CURRENT POSIBLE THEMES Don’t judge a book by its cover! Ender is a 6-year old boy, but he is a strategic genius. Peter puts off the persona of being dangerous, vicious, and cruel, but then shows compassion toward Ender when he does not think anyone sees him. Graff treats Ender like he is just another soldier and it is simply his job to train them, but admits to Anderson that he really does care for Ender.

7 Chapter 1-8: Summarizing and Themes
As a pod, choose one conflict Ender has encountered that has been resolved. Think of the events leading up to the conflict and what the effect was of the resolution. 5 minutes to discuss. (RL.7.1, RL.7.2, RL.7.3) Pod Member Roles 1: Write a 3 sentence exposition paragraph introducing the characters, setting, and situation. 2: Construct one full sentence explaining the conflict. Summarize three events leading up to the climax (you are not responsible for the climax, 3 is). *If you have a 5th pod member working with you, 2 will write conflict and 1 RA and 5 will write 2 RA* 3: In at least three sentences, summarize: the climax, falling action, and resolution. 4: In one sentence, construct a quality theme statement for your pod’s plot diagram. Construct another sentence how you could apply this lesson to your own life. NDP of pod member in top right corner of EACH page. Staple all pages together in the above order.

8 Homework Tonight: Chapter 1-8
Writing Prompt 3 (Chpt 8) – W.7.3a: W.7.3.A. I can gain the reader's attention by introducing ideas, a point of view, a narrator and/or character. Instructions: Consider the writing standard above. Write a short narrative answering the following prompt by introducing yourself as the character using the first-person point of view (I, me, we …). In the introduction, Card writes, “…never in my entire childhood did I feel like a child. I felt like a person all along – the same person that I am today”. Does his statement echo your own thoughts? Why or why not? (*DUE 5-8 sentences and ½ page*) Be sure all GOs, ?s, and activities are current and completed for chapters 1-8

9 Ender’s Game Vocabulary: Chapter 9
flattery: excessive and insincere praise detected: discovered or identified fundamental: a necessary base or central importance alliances: a relationship based on mutual benefit empathize: able to understand and share the feelings of another prestige: widespread respect and admiration domination: exercising control or influence over someone or something

10 Chapter Study Guide Questions: Chapter 9
How does the school picture of Peter appear in the mirror in the fantasy (mind) game? The computer mysteriously “found” the picture. To what state does the Wiggin family move? North Carolina What does Valentine send into space on Ender’s birthday? Smoke What does Peter torture? A squirrel What is Valentine’s strong point? She can persuade people to her point of view. In what army does Ender command a toon at age nine? Pheonix How do the boys at Battle School treat Ender? With respect. Who comes to the school to talk with Valentine? Colonel Graff What does Valentine send to Ender after speaking with Colonel Graff? A letter What becomes of the snake in Ender’s fantasy game? It turns into Valentine when he kisses it.

11 Chapter 9 (pg ) How is the Battle School computer more intelligent than the men in charge of the school? It can requisition information necessary without permission. The computer was able to find a recent picture of Peter to put into the game, where the IF has to requisition information like that. So the computer will only put things in the game that benefit the player, but the IF cannot figure out why Peter would be important to Ender at this point. The computer is able to interact with the minds of the students, it does not need to understand why it is doing something to know it needs to be done. The computer has the ability to recognize when things need to be introduced into the game to help the students even if the people do not understand why. The computer does not need permission to bypass protocol in order to gain that information. The computer can read Ender’s mind and therefore predict his actions. Ender may need to see that Peter is or is not his enemy, so the computer places Peter’s image in the game’s mirror.

12 Chapter 9 (pg. 166) Peter says, “The world is always a democracy in times of flux, and the man with the best voice will win.” What does he mean by this statement?? Whoever can sway the most people with their words will gain power. Whoever says the right words at the right time will win, because words are a powerful tool and can be used as a weapon to hurt people or used to help others and inform. The person who is able to persuade people with their words will win. The people of the world will listen to the person who makes the best impression with his/her words.

13 Chapter 9 (pg. 167, 168, 187) Peter says (167) that he doesn’t hate his siblings, but he just has to have control. Valentine feels (168) she has control over Peter. Ender feels (187) despair because he is not in control of his life. Why is control so important to each of these characters? (P) Because he is the oldest, he feels like he should have the control. Not having control causes him to be frightened, and his need for controlling causes him to be vicious toward others. (V) She knows Peter is dangerous and she feels like she can help him from getting out of hand. (E) Without control over his own life, he cannot make decisions for himself and it causes life to be difficult for him. The lack of control over situations causes Ender to be violent. Although he can be ruthless, he is not a violent person.

14 Why does Valentine feel as if she’s “sold” Ender?
Chapter 9 (pg. 189) Why does Valentine feel as if she’s “sold” Ender? She wrote Ender a letter that Graff told her to, to convince Ender he was nothing like Peter, and she was given a medal of honor in return. She gave the I.F. means of controlling Ender by writing the letter for Graff. She has given the I.F. the means of controlling him.

15 Homework Tonight: Chapter 9
Add at least 5 items into the correct categories in your Chpt 9 CAW. Complete a story map for Chpt 9 (Summarize the 5 most important events in the chapter). Answer Chpt 9 study guide questions. Fill in your prediction chart for prediction question 9 for Chpt 9. Decide how you will acquire a copy of the required reading over Thanksgiving break and return the form on Monday. (*DUE MONDAY*) Be sure all GOs, ?s, and activities are current and completed for chapters 1-9

16 Prediction Question Chapter 9
Chpt 9) Prediction 9: Will the multitude of Peters in the fantasy game rise up in revolt against Ender? Chapter/Pages CHARACTERS CONFLICT PREDICTION WHY? CORRECT? Chapter 9 Pg 155 – Pg 190 Ender Peter Valentine Graff Ender vs. I.F. (Char v Society) I predict the multitude of Peters in the fantasy game will/will not rise up in revolt against Ender. I predict this because… … reason 1 … reason 2 … etc

17 STORY MAP: Chpt 9 Graff and Imbu realize the computer obtained the picture of Peter without having requisitioned it. The computer can only do this if it is in the “best interest” of the soldier. Peter and Valentine create pseudonyms in order to change public opinion through writing debates on the nets. Peter knows the bugger war is coming to an end and wants to keep Earth from a land war. Ender is the leading soldier in the standings and a toon leader under Petra in the Phoenix Army at age 9. He has gained the respect of the rest of the soldiers, but it has cost him any closeness he had to the others. Graff meets with Valentine at her school on Earth to convince her to write a letter to Ender, reminding him he is nothing like Peter, in order to get Ender to pass the “End of the World” in the mind game. Ender receives the letter from Valentine and resents the I.F. for using Valentine as a tool against him. In the mind game, he kisses the snake he had killed so many times before, and it turns into Valentine.

f Andrew Wiggin “Ender” What Ender says: What Ender does: What Ender thinks: What others do to Ender: Environment (School/Home/Battle School): Authority interaction or inaction and how it affects Ender’s decisions: Other conflicts that affect Ender: . In the mind game, Ender kisses the snake he and Peter have destroyed several times before, only to find out the snake was actually Valentine. Ender remains the leading soldier in the standings. Ender continues to lead the evening practice sessions (mostly elite training now, but all Launchies are still welcome). The letter from Val caused Ender to cry in front of the other soldiers. Even though he knows Val wrote the letter, he does not believe it is genuine because it is what the I.F. wanted her to say to him. He has no control over his own life. Valentine writes a letter to Ender, convincing him he is “nothing like you-know-who (Peter)”. The other soldiers now respect Ender. Alai and Shen remember the time in the BR when the older boys attacked them, but act as if Ender wasn’t there. Ender has been moved into another army. He is now a toon leader in the Pheonix Army under the command of Petra Arkanian. . I.F. is blocking communication between Ender and his family. The computer was able to obtain a recent picture of Peter and enter it into the mind game. Ender turns 9. The mind game turns the snake into Valentine when Ender kisses it and the cheering multitudes are all wearing Peter’s face. Graff asks Valentine to write a letter to Ender, specifically to help Ender see he is not like Peter. . .

23 Chapter 10-11: Summarizing
Pod DiscussionRoundRobin: Pods will work with ONE chapter at a time. We will cycle through this process twice, once for each chapter. Round 1) Each pod member will take turns (30 seconds) brainstorming events that happened in the selected chapter. You may skim the text to help you remember, but not your notes. You may also take notes during this brainstorm session. You will cycle around the pod twice, so if you remember something, jot it down! Round 2) Pod members will work with their shoulder partner taking turns to record as many events from the chapter as they can remember onto the index cards (MUST have at least 5 events per shoulder partner pair, only one event per index card). You may abbreviate. Round 3) POPCORN! Place all index cards in the center of the pod and mix them up. Pod members will rotate taking turns drawing and organizing the cards in chronological order. Place similar cards together. Pod members will continue to take turns until all cards are placed correctly and the pod has a complete summary of the chapter.

24 Chapter 10-11: Character Attribute Web
MIX IT UP!) Now that your pod has settled on the chronological order, go back and take turns identifying where you would place the information on the CAW. Some events may not have a direct effect on Ender, and you will need to identify this as well. Once the pod member has independently identified the category, the rest of the pod may open discussion to agree or change the category. Once your pod has come to agreement on category, write the CAW category or N/A (not applicable – does not apply) on the back of the index card. Identify CAW category Pod discuss and agree on a category Log category or N/A on back of each index card

27 Story Map – Chapters 10 and 11
Col. Graff talks to Anderson about stacking the games against Ender. Although the instructors are concerned the simulations are too much, Ender realizes the potential of his army, and is confident they could win in battle. Graff assigns Ender to command Dragon Army. Dragon is made of inexperienced soldiers, all small, no veterans, none from his practice sessions. Dragon wins first battle against Rabbit using unseen strategies. The opposing commander was respectful and Ender decides to act that way if ever defeated. Is treated with a mix of awe and distain from other commanders in mess hall. Ender practices with his army and singles out Bean, the smallest of the soldiers. He realizes he is acting just like Bonzo/Graff, and decides to change the way he interacts with his soldiers. Dragon has 7 battles in 7 days and wins them all. On the 7th day, they are assigned an 8th battle w/only 10 min notice, against Salamader (Bonzo). Anderson has changed the rules, no unscheduled practices, and no practicing outside of your own army. He goes to the videos to study bugger’s strategies. Ender talks to Alai and realizes they aren’t as close as they once were. Ender decided after them using Val as a tool, he would never let them hurt him enough to make him cry ever again. “The teachers are the enemy.” Ender assigns Bean a special unit of 5 soldiers (one from each toon) and himself to command independently from the rest of the army to come up with wild and crazy ideas to try in battle.

f Andrew Wiggin “Ender” What Ender says: What Ender does: What Ender thinks: What others do to Ender: Environment (School/Home/Battle School): Authority interaction or inaction and how it affects Ender’s decisions: Other conflicts that affect Ender: (223) “I can’t pretend I like the way they’re screwing around with us, but I do like one thing – that I’ve got an army that can handle it. (233) “As long as you’re cheating, why don’t you train the other army to cheat intelligently?” Ender singles out the smallest soldier in practice (Bean) and pick on his actions in front of the rest of the army. Ender studies the propaganda videos from 1st invasion to learn the bugger strategy. Orders his toons to clean up the BR – he learned from his own experience one soldier left unaccounted for can lead to defeat. Beats Bonzo with odds in Salamander favor, has his smallest soldier point out Bonzo’s faults as a commander, and did not show a dignified surrender. Shows how tired and frustrated he is in front of Bean, giving Bean a glimpse of Ender as a real person. He thinks he has no choices, no control over his own life. The teachers run everything. He will commend Crazy Tom for thinking to flash his toon’s suits in battle to reduce their visibility and provide a shield. He will show the same respect in defeat that Rabbit’s commander showed him. Ender decides after they’ve used Val as a tool, he would never allow them to make him cry again. Bonzo won’t realize he was angry w/teachers and it will increase Bonzo’s anger toward Ender. Ender is now the commander of his own army and lives in a bunk separate from the other soldiers. Some commanders ignore, isolate, or pick on ender for excelling, other try to learn how to defeat him from the loosing commanders. Carn Carby (Rabbit commander) congratulates Ender in the mess hall. . Graff assigned Ender as commander of Dragon Army. The army had been discontinued because no Dragon Army was successful and it became a superstition that the name was the cause. The computer stacks the battles against Ender, scheduling 8 battles in only 7 day. Anderson changed the rules and scheduled practices with army only. Instructors hand picked Ender’s army and stacked it full of inexperienced (novice) soldiers. Ender is not allowed to trade ANY of his soldiers.
