3 Health Insurance for Students
Even Healthy Students may need healthcare services while at College. Student Health Centers provide many primary care services at no charge, but they are not equipped to provide imaging, or diagnostic laboratory services and are not open evening hours or weekends. Students needing x-ray, an ER visit, blood work, or a weekend visit to an urgent care center, will not have access to these services without insurance or incurring a significant bill. A single hospitalization can cost thousands of dollars.

4 Health Insurance for Students
Having Insurance means having access to the medical care needed in a way that minimized disruption to your child’s studies, life and finances. While Mercyhurst University currently requires insurance for Athletes and International Students, it strongly encourages ALL students to carry adequate health insurance. Any Mercyhurst student not currently required to show proof of insurance, are still welcome to purchase the Highmark Community Blue PPO.

5 Rules for Enrollment Mercyhurst University requires all student Athletes and all International Students to have certain minimum health care requirements in order to attend classes. If a student is currently covered by either their parent’s or a spouse’s employer-sponsored group plan, they may opt-out of Mercyhurst’s sponsored plan if it meets the requirements set forth by the University. Individual Policies & Travel Polices are not accepted.

6 Rules for Enrollment (con’t)
Mercyhurst University strongly recommends all students obtain and maintain health insurance while they are earning their degree. Mercyhurst offers a Health Insurance option for all students, regardless of the number of course credits they are enrolled in.

7 Rules for Enrollment (con’t)
Athletes All Athletes must enter their current insurance for review on the Student Health Portal by July 15th. Instructions will be sent to all athletes by their coaches. Students will be contacted if their coverage is not sufficient. International Athletes will be billed for the plan on their tuition bill in 6 month installments. If it is found that their current coverage meets Mercyhurst’s requirements, the charge will be removed.

8 Rules for Enrollment (con’t)
International Students All international students will be billed for the plan on their tuition bill. In order to have the charge removed, students must submit their current coverage for approval. Students will be notified by if their coverage was denied.
