Parents Who Went to College
Jared Fiacco Sam Frarey Melinda Stanton Allie Wean Parents Who Went to College

Why? To find out how many people above the age of 25 achieved an associates degree or higher in VVS, compared to the population.

Design We designed a survey which was handed out to 171 students at VVS asking about their parents’ education statuses. With a total 213 parents that attended college we will compare this to the population found in the 2011 census.

The Survey Name___ Grade___ Have either of your parents attended college? Yes no If yes, mother, father, or both? What degree was obtained? Mother____ Father_____ Uncertain What field was studied? Mother_____ Father______ Did they obtain an occupation regarding their field of study? Where did you go to elementary did you go to? Vernon Verona Sherrill other What is your parents’ marital status? Married divorced prefer not to answer How many siblings do you have? _____ Have you ever had ISS or OSS? Do you enjoy yoga pants? Yes no

Results Ho: p=.19 H1: p≠.19 Margin of error: .0301
Using the z-score formula, a sample size (n) of 213, a population of million, a P of 59/ , a P-hat of 74/213, σ= We found a z-score of 1.754 This made the probability of our average being higher than the nation .0401 An alpha of .01 makes our data normal.

Conclusion Our school’s parental education is normal compared to the nation’s education of people over the age of 25. So therefore, we accept the null hypothesis because our probability is more than the alpha.

Evaluation There was various layers to have to deal with. With each layer left more room for error. Collecting the data was harder than we planned, because many kids weren’t sure what their parents did after high school. We should have went around and sampled at the source, the actual people who were 25 and older.

Modifications We did not account for siblings who may have taken the survey (each parent would have been counted as two statistics), next time we would keep track of sibling relationships. Another problem we had was Students not taking the survey seriously and putting fake answers, next time we would supervise their answers more. We could have specified more with our questions, allowing more specific answers. For example, when we asked “did they obtain an occupation regarding their field of study?” we should have had the person pick if it was their mother or father or both, not yes or no.

Biases One bias might be that students could have felt embarrassed to answer if their parents didn’t attend college, which would influence the whole survey. Another bias was that we handed out most of our surveys during lunch periods, where most kids are goofing around and don’t usually take things seriously. If we were to hand them out during study halls or during down time in our classes our answers might have been more legitimate. We should have asked the people who were 25 years or older to go to the main source. If we were to do this over we would have skipped going to the kids which left room for error.
