1 Do Your Parents Affect Your Future? A survey at Deering High School tells you why. By Sarah Muzzy

2 An Introduction n Choices as an adult are important. n Do the choices parents make affect how their children turn out? n Do getting married or divorced, what neighborhood you buy a house in, what age you have children at, and your level of education affect your children?

3 n 97% of students surveyed plan to go to college. n Only 3% plan not to go to college.

4 Parents Level 100% of students who responded they are not going to college, had parents who both did not go to college. of Education

5 n The average GPA of students surveyed is 91.07, and the standard deviation 4.65. The average GPA of students who have at least one parent with a Masters degree was 93.25. The average GPA of students who had neither parent attend college was 86.65. It is 95% certain that the GPA will be between 89.81 and 92.32 The top 10% of students had a grade of 97.02 or higher.

6 Parents Ages The average mothers age of students surveyed is 45. The standard deviation was 5.33. Mothers and fathers ages are positively correlated with a correlation coefficient of.805 The average fathers age of students surveyed is 46 with a standard deviation of 5.39 Parents age and GPA are not correlated with a coefficient of.15 for mothers age and.29 for fathers age. The middle 50% of mothers were between the ages of 41 and 48.

7 n The majority of students surveyed answered they consider themselves “Middle” class.(83%) The average GPA of a student who felt they are “Upper” class is 93.14 The average GPA of a student who felt they are “Middle” class is 90.65 The average GPA of a student who felt they are “Lower” class is 86

8 n 37% of students surveyed live in North Deering n 1 out of 4 students surveyed live in Deering Center The average GPA of students living in North Deering is 91.65 The average GPA of students living in Deering Center is 90.66 The average GPA of students living in Riverton is 87.8

9 n 70% of students surveyed have married parents n 28% have parents that are divorced The average GPA of a student with parents who are not together is 89.29 The average GPA of students whose parents are married is 91.35

10 The Conclusion n Much of the data shows that certain choices parents make affect their children. n A parents Level of Education, Neighborhood, and Marital Status affect a students GPA. n Parents age did not affect GPA.
