11 PLAN Begin with the end in mind
Investigate the courses that best prepare for college Create a vertical plan of rigorous courses – your senior year counts! Balance leadership, community and extra-curricular with academics Use assessment data to plan The 2nd step in getting ready for your future is Planning! Begin with the end in mind…what courses will help you prepare for college? Meet with your campus counselor to discuss your options. Make sure your counselor knows you want a college pathway. As you are planning, make sure you are balanced – colleges want students who take challenging courses, are leaders, and who give back to their community…You need to be well-rounded! Also, use your college readiness data to help you plan.

12 College Readiness Assessments
Administered at School: PSAT 8 PSAT 9 PSAT/NMSQT - 10th & 11th SAT - 11th On your own: SAT/ACT- Spring 11th grade Summer before 12th Fall 12th grade You took the PSAT 8 this past October. You should use your PSAT 8 score information to help you plan and prepare for college. You will take the PSAT again in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.

13 Grade 8 PSAT Assessment Student score reports will be sent home with students in January Purpose: PSAT is the first step on the College & Career Readiness Pathway Provides information about academic strengths and weaknesses Indicates academic readiness for college or the workplace Helps student plan their high school coursework Look for your score report for the PSAT 8 in January! Make a folder for your PSAT reports so that you can keep them each year and reflect on growth and areas that need to improve. These reports indicate your areas of weakness and strength towards college readiness. You have three more years in which you can improve your score… Remember, the higher the score, the better options you have and potential for scholarships!

14 Your test results can indicate your AP Potential!
Advanced Placement Your test results can indicate your AP Potential! consider preAP courses consider AP, dual credit, IB courses Your PSAT 8 score report will also indicate if you show potential for taking AP courses. Please see your counselor to discuss taking PreAP, AP, IB, and dual credit courses!

15 “The will to succeed is nothing without the will to prepare!”
It is important that all students have the skills needed to be successful in college and the workplace. Becoming college-ready does not happen overnight; skills are developed by taking rigorous courses in high school. College readiness takes time and effort…It doesn’t happen overnight. Read quote… “The will to succeed is nothing without the will to prepare!”

16 ACT Choose the best path for you
Discuss 9th grade options with your counselor Stay informed The 3rd step in preparing for your future is to ACT! Remember to EXPLORE your options, work on a PLAN, and then be ready to ACT. Remember, your counselor is a great resource to work on your plan and to take action in terms of scheduling the right courses for next year.

17 How to prepare GISD has set up Khan Academy accounts for all secondary students. One of the biggest ACTIONS you need to take is to prepare for next year’s PSAT by using Khan Academy. Every GISD 8th-12th grader has a Khan Academy already set up for them to use.

18 Practice Makes Progress…
According to PrepScholar, practices makes progress 10 hours = point gain 20 hours = point gain The more you practice, the better chance for an increased score!

19 According to College Board, students who take the PSAT score 145 points higher on the SAT than those who don’t take the preparatory exam. And just think, you will take the PSAT 4 times before taking your SAT!!!

20 Set a Goal and Work Backwards
What do you want to do as a career? What degree is required? What university offers that degree? What does it take to get in? What score do you need on SAT and how close are you? If you want to go to college, you need to set goals by working backwards. These five steps help you with the backwards planning…

21 Set a Goal and Work Backwards
Goal = Mechanical Engineering University = Texas A&M Entrance requirements = top quarter of your class Required SAT score = 1300 ACT score = 26 Current PSAT score = 950 Dedicated study time = 60 hours (study an hour a week) Now, let’s see how backwards planning may work… Set a Goal and Work Backwards

22 Study for 20 Hours Before Each PSAT
SAT11th Grade = 1335* PSAT/NMSQT 11th Grade = 1130 PSAT/NMSQT 10th Grade = 1070 PSAT 9 9th Grade = 1010 PSAT/8 8th Grade = 950 This slide shows how a student who commits to 20 hours of practice a year can achieve their college goal. * with 145 pt gain from experience with PSAT
