Best Practices Metrics for Success Align strategic and financial planning Days/weeks to complete the strategic plan Shorten the annual budget cycle # of days/weeks/months to complete the annual budget, # of FTEs to complete the annual budget % of time spent on data collection vs. analysis Planning costs as a % of revenue Employ a rolling forecast Frequency of rolling forecast, # of quarters in rolling forecast % forecast accuracy Leverage driver-based planning & forecasting # of budget drivers Frequency of driver updates Drive planning across the enterprise # of Finance and LOB managers participating in the planning/forecasting process # of metrics visible to managers to actively track performance against budget Speaker Notes: Here are some of the best practices we see our customers adopting when it comes to driving more accurate forecasts and metrics you can use to gauge success in this area. This includes: Aligning strategic plans to financial budgeting and planning. Shortening the annual budget cycle, by spending less time and including less detail in the budget. Rolling forecasts is a popular technique for refreshing budget assumptions on a regular basis – quarterly, monthly etc. And the use of Driver-based plans and forecasts can help save a lot of time and effort. Finally, to increase accuracy many organizations are driving the planning process beyond finance to the broader community of line managers who can provide their input and intelligence into the plans and forecasts. There are a number of metrics that can be used to track your success in this area, and to benchmark your organization against your peers and best practices in the market. Organizations like the Hackett Group and APQC publish metrics for this process that you can benchmark your organization against. Here are some examples. Next slide….

Oracle Hyperion Planning has guided task flows and supports both bottom-up and top-down planning processes. It has tools for budget administrators to monitor participants’ progress submitting their plans, and workflow and plan management capabilities that support the plan review and approval process. Oracle Hyperion Planning’s powerful plan management and workflow functionality, including notifications, alerts, and task lists, empowers users to track and communicate the progress of plans and budgets. Ownership of plans can be designated based on a specified intersection of key plan dimensions. Approval paths can be specified for each slice of the plan. Oracle offers a unique solution to this problem with our Financial Data Quality Management application. This slide shows the idea structure of the system support for this: Manage flow of data/metadata: Manage complex, hierarchical enterprise dimensions in a unified environment, and to align those dimensions across a range of operational, transactional and analytical systems. Align dimensions across multiple technology platforms ERP, EPM…. ERP adapter to provide data integration to Oracle EBS (11, 12), PSFT (9 GL) and SAP R/3 (4.6c, ECC6), including drill-back to source transactions for data investigation and issue resolution. ERP Write-back support with load files created via a reverse mapping process. The important point is this needs to be in the hands of the business user not IT as the business user understands the processes and the data.

Rolling Forecast is Gaining Popularity
Year X Year X + 1 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 1st review 2nd review 3rd review 4th review KEY: = Forecast = Actuals Speaking Points: The key is that the forecast is updated each quarter with new actuals, and a fresh forecast for future periods. Running a process as this requires a centralized, flexible planning and forecasting system – that enables the fast collection of new planning assumptions and forecast information from a wide variety of line managers in different functions – i.e. Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Supply Chain etc. This type of process is very difficult to manage with a spreadsheet-based process, where new planning files need to be sent out, collected and aggregated for each iteration. They key here is ensuring that financial targets and budgets are fed as input into the operational planning process. This ensures that financial constraints are considered as part of the operational planning process. Once the budgets are in place, throughout the fiscal year, updated forecasts are then fed from the operational parts of the business into the financial planning function. This can include updated demand plans, sales volumes, operating volumes and other drivers that can impact the overall financial plan.

Align Detailed Workforce, Capital Asset and Project Plans to Overall Expense Plan
Financial Plan Workforce Plan Capital Asset Plan Project Financial Plan Speaking points: For customers who need to budget and plan at a granular level, they can perform the detailed build-up of their Workforce or Capital planning assumptions in purpose-built modules, which then roll up into the core financial planning module. The workforce and capital planning modules are seeded with information from the transactional systems – such as existing staff, salaries, review dates, and other attributes which can then be updated by the manager. This makes their job much easier and efficient and we’ve seen strong adoption of these modules, and we continue to build these out – next will come Project Planning, as well as specific modules for certain industries – such as banking and public sector. Detailed Headcount, Staff Expenses, Salary & Compensation Detailed Depreciation, Asset Purchase/Sell, Asset Expenses Detailed financial planning for contract, capital and indirect projects

What many of these organization lack is the ability to align the project details they hold in operational project management systems with the overall strategic and detailed financial plans that they use to manage the organizations finances. This lack of alignment can lead to overall funding issues and to the failure of projects and potentially the entire organization due lack of planning and understanding of the funding required. It this issue that Oracle Hyperion Project Financial Planning is designed to address and resolve. It addresses the need of typical contract based industries like those listed on the slide and it can deal with typical contract activities that exist in all industries today like major IT projects, and projects for HR, Facilities, Product Development etc New with R : What-if Analysis Capabilities EVM Analysis Revenue Modeling for Capital Projects Integration with HSF
