In 1776 there were over half million African Americans At beginning of war, African Americans were not allowed to enlist

British offered freedom to some male slaves who would serve the King.

In response to King’s offer, Washington asked congress to allow free African Americans to enlist

26 Joseph Brant Mohawks joined with loyalists in 1778 to raid villages in Pennsylvania and New York. Patriots fought back next year and destroyed many Iroquois villages.

Group of Virginia frontier fighters and Southern American Indians led by George Rogers Clark devise capture key forts in midwest

29 His Plan With 130 men, he marched back and force in front of the British held Fort Vincennes This made appearance of having a lot more men. Used sharpshooters to shoot into fort

30 He captures the fort when loyalists get scared.
He never quite finishes getting midwest but this was key victory

Bernardo de Galvez Governor of Spanish Louisiana Was neutral at beginning but aids Americans with supplies

32 Bernardo de Galvez Spain entered war in 1779.
Galvez seized British held forts along Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico as well as West Florida.

35 Greatest American sea victory took place in 1779.
Captain John Paul Jones gets into a battle with British warship Serapis on the North sea

36 The British Captain calls out to Jones and asks if he gives up
Jones says his famous words “I have not yet begun to fight”

37 Bonhomme Richard and Serapis

38 The British Captain ends up losing the battle and John Paul Jones takes over the ship, leaving their ship sinking and badly damaged
