1 Don’t be filled with alcohol/drugs! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!
Ephesians 5:8-18 (This is one of 13 commandments for Church Age believers in Ephesians 5:1-18) Don’t be filled with alcohol/drugs! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!

2 The OBC doctrinal statement is Scripture organized into topics, paragraphs, and sentences
We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person Who convicts the (John 3:16)world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and that He is the Divine Agent in regeneration, (spiritually) baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption (John 16:13, Romans 8:9, 2 Corinthians 12:12-14, Ephesians 1:13-14).

3 We believe the Holy Spirit:
Is a Person (John 16:8-11; Eph. 4:30) Convicts every human being of: a. Sin in their lives (in need God’s forgiveness) b. The righteousness of Christ (died in our place) c. Judgment of Satan (doomed with this world) Is the Divine Agent of: a. Regeneration John 3:5-6; Eph. 2: b. (Spirit) Baptism into the Church 1 Cor.12: c. Indwelling 1 Cor.6:19 (with me and in me 24/7) d. Sealing Eph. 1:13-14 (heaven guaranteed)

5 OBC statement, part two on the Holy Spirit
OBC statement, part two on the Holy Spirit. Our Guide into truth and our power to live godly We believe that the Holy Spirit is the Divine Teacher who guides into all truth, and that it is the privilege and duty of all the saved to be filled with the Holy Spirit, thus making a godly life possible (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 1:13-14; Ephesians 5:18). P.S. Don’t say the Church (all believers), Jesus the head of the Church, and the Holy Spirit in the Church have “FAILED”! See Matthew 16:18

7 The Holy Spirit: Is every believer’s Teacher, guiding every believer into truth. John 16:13 Fills, encourages, comforts, empowers, renews, develops character (fruit) in every believer who abides in Christ and chooses to have His Spirit in control. Eph. 5:18; Gal.5:22-23

9 OBC statement, part three on the Holy Spirit Spiritual gifts and their purpose
We believe that everyone (spiritually) baptized by the Holy Spirit into the Body of Christ is given spiritual gifts to be used to function in cooperation with other members of Christ’s body, under Christ’s Headship, in order to carry out His will on the earth Corinthians 12:8- 31, 14:1-40;

10 Scripture At the moment a person is born again (Jn 3:5-6) the Holy Spirit baptizes (spiritually) him/her into the Church, Christ’s Body. 1 Cor.12:12-13 The Holy Spirit empowers every believer with one or more graces, servings, or works with which he/she can carry out the will of Christ designed to bring Him glory and benefit to others 1 Cor. 12:1-8

12 OBC statement: part four on the Holy Spirit Healing and the prayer of faith
We believe that God can and does heal physical, emotional, and spiritual disease according to his divine will and Word, and that He does hear and answer the prayer of faith (John 15:7, 1 John 5:14-15, James 5:13-16).

13 The Holy Spirit Facilitates healing of the a. body b. emotions c. human spirit Prays to the Father for us according to the Father’s will. Rom.8:26; John 15:7; John 5:14-15 A prayer of faith is a prayer that is in agreement with the will of God James 5:13-16; 1 Kings 17:1-4; 18:1, 41-46

15 OBC statement: Part five on the Holy Spirit Miracle gifts of language and healing replaced
We believe that certain gifts of the Holy Spirit, in particular, the gift of tongues and the gift of miraculous healing as seen in the early church, were temporary gifts and gradually ceased as the New Testament Scriptures were completed and their authority became established (Acts 4:8, 31; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 13:8; 2 Corinthians 12:12, Ephesians 4:7-12).

16 The miracle language gift and the miracle healing gift fulfilled their roles until the New Testament was written

17 Scripture: “Gifts” pride and division, so let us be humble and focus on “fruit”
Since an emphasis on the “gifts” of the Spirit led to pride and division in the church at Corinth, we would rather focus our attention on the “fruit” of the Spirit; qualities of Christ-likeness that the Spirit is perfecting in every believer (1 Corinthians 12:15-27, Galatians 5:22-23).

19 1. Can you detect or “feel” your own “spirit” separately from your intellect and emotions?
2. Can you detect or “feel” the difference between your own intellect/emotions and thoughts or feelings that the devil puts into your mind? Peter didn’t. Matt. 16:22-23 3. If you can’t detect or feel the difference in questions 1 & 2, how do you know whether that “inner voice” is God’s voice and not your own intellect/emotions, or the devil’s?

20 The only way to know whose inner voice you are hearing is to know the will of God
Rom. 12:2 “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” 1 Thess. 5:18 “This is the will of God in Christ Jesus” 1 Thess. 4:3 “For this is the will of God, your sanctification” Eph. 1:9 “having made known to us the mystery of His will” Eph. 5:17 “understand what the will of the Lord is.” Eph. 6:6 “doing the will of God from the heart” Col.1:9 “filled with the knowledge of His will”

21 Pride, alcohol, drugs, and the devil all “mess” with the intellect, the will, and the emotions
When we are under the influence of these things, we are not under the influence of God, His Spirit, or His Word A command from God to each of His children Eph. 5:18 “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation: but be filled with the Spirit. “Dissipation”=outrageous behavior, violence, immorality, rebellion

22 Raymond Edman was president of Wheaton College
Raymond Edman was president of Wheaton College. In 1967 he was preaching in chapel, reminding the students that they were to enter chapel as if coming into the presence of the King. He urged them to understand what it meant to worship the Lord and to cultivate an eternal perspective that would anchor and sustain them through the pressures and anxieties of life. Suddenly, Dr. Edman collapsed and entered the presence of the King The Holy Spirit is a still small voice within us, reminding us that this life is not all there is. Reality is more than what we see, hear, touch, taste, and smell “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him . .

23 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit” 1 Cor.2:9-10
The Holy Spirit wants to reveal those things to you, too. Are you listening? “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our Spirit that we are the children of God.” Rom.8:15-16 You were once a slave to sin, the devil, and the world system, but now you have an eternal destiny that stretches through the years into eternity
